About the role

Join the Ground breaking World of HDD – Be the Backbone of the UK’s Infrastructure!

Are you ready to take your career underground, literally? As a Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Operative, you’ll be at the forefront of installing vital pipelines and cables that power communities across the UK, all while using cutting‑edge technology and specialised equipment.

From prepping worksites and steering precision drill heads, to solving complex problems on the fly and ensuring top‑notch safety and environmental standards, this role demands skill, focus and a passion for excellence. With hands‑on work, teamwork and the chance to make a visible impact, no two days are the same.

We’re looking for experienced, safety conscious, mechanically minded professionals with a can do attitude, willingness to travel and a UK driving license. If you’re CPCS or NPORS certified, or willing to train, this could be your next big move.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Previous experience in horizontal directional drilling or a related field, such as underground utility installation, trenchless technology, or construction, is highly desirable.
  • Certification or training in horizontal directional drilling operations, equipment operation, and safety practices is preferred. Relevant certifications may include CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) or NPORS (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme).
  • Mechanical aptitude and a good understanding of drilling equipment, hydraulic systems, and power tools used in horizontal directional drilling operations.
  • Strong awareness of health and safety regulations, hazard identification, risk assessment, and safe working practices in the construction and utility industries.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills, with the ability to analyse technical issues, troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, and implement effective solutions in a timely manner.
  • Good physical fitness and stamina, as the role may involve working outdoors in various weather conditions, lifting heavy equipment, and performing physically demanding tasks.
  • A valid UK driving license is often required, as the role may involve traveling to different work sites and operating company vehicles or machinery.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and overtime, to meet project deadlines and respond to emergency situations as required.
