Solutions Architect – Payments

MRJ Recruitment is partnering with a global leader embarking on a large-scale payments transformation, reimagining their payments platform from the ground up.

We’re looking for a hands-on Technical Solutions Architect with a strong engineering background and deep payments expertise. You’ll define the architecture for a new, scalable payments ecosystem driving decisions that shape authorisation, capture, settlement, and reconciliation across multiple services and integrations.

What you’ll do:

• Own and define the end-to-end target architecture across services, APIs, and operational components.
• Lead early discovery, evaluating options, assessing risks, and shaping decisions at pace.
• Design resilient, secure systems for payment flows covering banking, card schemes, and service provider integrations.
• Set standards for engineering quality: API design, observability, reliability, and deployment.
• Collaborate closely with engineering and product teams to turn complex requirements into elegant, scalable solutions.

What you’ll bring:

• Engineering-first approach, you started in software engineering and evolved into architecture.
• Deep payments knowledge, hands-on experience across authorisation, capture, and settlement.
• Integration expertise with PSPs, acquirers, or networks (e.g. Worldpay, Adyen, Stripe, Square, Vocalink).
• Strong banking and card scheme understanding, both technically and operationally.
• Modern tech toolkit: Kotlin, Rust, React/Next.js, Android (or equivalent).
• Comfortable shaping architecture in greenfield programmes with high ambiguity and big impact.
• Clear communicator, able to influence technical direction across engineering and leadership teams.
