Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Medical Secretary/Clinical Coder to join our friendly and supportive GP practice team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong attention to detail and a good understanding of medical terminology to contribute to high‑quality care and accurate clinical record keeping. The successful candidate will join our small but friendly and professional secretarial team. The position is permanent full‑time and salary depends on experience.

About the Practice

The Gill Medical Centre is a high‑performing 10,000‑patient practice situated in the heart of Walkden. We are supported by a skilled GP, pharmacy, nursing and workflow optimisation team, and a welcoming reception team.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a professional secretarial and clinical coding service to ensure patient satisfaction.
  • Type referral letters and general correspondence.
  • Use the e‑referral system and keep referral templates and forms up to date.
  • Perform clinical coding of all medical documentation.
  • Review and analyse clinical documentation to accurately code diagnoses, procedures, treatments and results.
  • File clinical correspondence into EMIS Web.
  • Annotate documents for clinicians and ensure appropriate actions are taken.
  • Workflow documents via Docman to appropriate team members (GP, pharmacist, nurse, receptionist) based on practice protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with coding standards and guidelines.
  • Liaise with clinicians and colleagues to clarify information and resolve coding discrepancies.
  • Support the practice in meeting key NHS targets such as QOF through coding optimisation.
  • Assist in audits and compliance activities related to clinical coding.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of coding processes and documentation practices.
  • Undertake general administrative tasks as required.
  • Scan referral letters onto patient records if required.
  • Liaise with hospitals and secondary care regarding patient appointment and test result queries.
  • Deal with queries raised by doctors, practice manager, and patients.

Qualifications

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines.
  • Good IT skills and understanding of clinical systems.
  • Experience using EMIS Web/Docman preferred.

Other Requirements

Deposit of Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check as per the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
