Consultant Medical Oncologist – HPB & NET

Job Overview: Consultant-level care for patients with hepatopancreatobiliary and neuroendocrine tumour malignancies at The Christie, Manchester. The post comprises 10 sessions per week, contract permanent, and includes outpatient reviews, day‑case units, systemic anti‑cancer therapy delivery, and inpatient care on adult oncology wards. Closing date 16/06/2026.

Main Duties

  • Outpatient and inpatient reviews.
  • Management of patients with HPB and NET malignancies receiving standard therapy and in phase I/II/III trials, including treatment decisions and ongoing care.
  • Participation in all relevant aspects of clinical governance, including protocol updates, clinical audit, and maintaining up‑to‑date guidelines under supervision of other consultants.
  • Contribution to current research projects and establishment of new opportunities within the disease groups.
  • Revision and development of evidence‑based protocols for patients and undertaking administrative duties associated with patient care.
  • Maintenance of continuing professional development aligned with Royal College of Physicians recommendations.
  • Contribution to undergraduate teaching on oncology topics and to the training of junior doctors and multidisciplinary team members, including acting as clinical/educational supervisor.
  • Undertaking clinical audit as a member of The Christie Medical Staff Committee.

The postholder will deliver high‑quality consultant‑led care across 7 days, including participation in planned weekend and weekday clinical activity to support safe, timely decision‑making and continuity of care.

Job Plan Timetable

The schedule is indicative and will be confirmed upon commencement. All new consultant colleagues must have 0.25 core SPA within their job plan to support Trust appraisal and supervision requirements. The timetable includes specialist tumour clinic, research meetings, SPA/Admin, specialist clinical care, and on‑call commitments.

Person Specification

  • GMC registration with a license to practice and specialist registration via CCT or CESR.
  • Evidence of productive ethical research relevant to oncology.
  • Demonstrable publication potential (e.g., first‑author original article publications).

Experience

  • Wide experience in medical oncology and clinical trials with a demonstrated interest in improving patient outcomes for malignancies.
  • Experience independently managing patients with an oncological diagnosis.
  • Experience teaching undergraduates, conducting clinical audit, and supporting junior colleagues.
  • Experience in leadership within a service area.
