Main duties of the job

Act as a lead midwife within the acute maternity unit to provide specialist expertise to clients in the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods. Work independently to provide high‑quality evidence‑based care to women and their families. Be responsible for the development of the maternity service, ensuring high standards of clinical care are maintained, and manage the day‑to‑day running of the unit, acting as lead coordinator on a rotational basis.

Qualifications

  • Registered Midwife
  • Further development in midwifery to postgraduate diploma or equivalent
  • Foundation management certificate or equivalent
  • Essential IT skills (EITS) or equivalent
  • Advanced life support in obstetrics, or equivalent
  • Postgraduate management certificate or equivalent
  • Teaching certificate or equivalent
  • Supervisor of midwives

Experience

  • Dealing with obstetric emergencies
  • Neonatal and adult resuscitation
  • Staff management
  • Post‑registration ante‑, intra‑ and post‑partum care
  • Management of change

Knowledge

  • Continuing professional development with portfolio
  • Child protection issues
  • Midwives Codes of Practice
  • Equality legislation and best practice
  • Budgetary implications
  • Audit
  • Equality impact assessment
