Fitter / Turner / Machinist

Capita seeks an experienced Fitter / Turner / Machinist to teach workshop theory and practical skills to Service and Civilian trainees in line with Foundation Degree and Defence standards. The role is based at HMS Sultan, Portsmouth and requires eligibility for UK Security Clearance at SC level.

Base pay and contract

Full‑time role, 37.5 hours a week on a term‑time only basis. This role is offered on a 45‑week per year term‑time basis with pro‑rata salary including contractual annual leave and bank holidays. Non‑working weeks include 2 weeks at Christmas and Easter and 3 weeks in August.

What you’ll be doing

  • Teach workshop theory and practical skills in fitting and turning to Service and Civilian trainees, aligned with Foundation Degree and Defence standards.
  • Prepare and assess course materials, including marking exams, updating content, and maintaining training equipment.
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert, offering technical advice and support to external units and authorities.
  • Support course development and coordination, ensuring high‑quality instruction and alignment with Defence training requirements.

What we’re looking for

Essential skills/experience/qualifications

  • A recognised apprenticeship or a relevant alternative period of training in fitting and turning processes to the appropriate ONC, City and Guilds (part III), BTEC or an equivalent level qualification.
  • Recent experience within the appropriate workshop skills. (Applicants who have completed a full Services Engineering Apprenticeship plus recent practical experience in that trade or specialisation will be deemed to meet the necessary requirements.)
  • Proven experience in all aspects of fitting, turning, milling and grinding as well as being able to interpret engineering drawings in accordance with BS8888.

Desirable skills/experience/qualifications

  • Previous experience in a training/instructional role would be beneficial, but training in Defence instructional techniques will be provided for the successful applicant without prior experience.
  • Previous experience in Computer Aided Design would be beneficial.
