A personal assistant is responsible for enabling a young woman to live a normal, fulfilling life and to be as independent as possible. Duties will be determined together with her family. The role requires a fun, enthusiastic, energetic, conscientious, tolerant, dedicated, caring individual with good communication skills. The assistant will be based in the client’s home and will help maintain independence, support community activities, and perform personal care.
Responsibilities
- Have an up-to-date understanding and knowledge of an epilepsy care plan, and know what procedures to take place in an emergency.
- Know rescue medication and epilepsy medication, and how to administer them.
- Assist with personal care (washing, skin care, dressing, intimate care such as toilet assistance).
- Record well‑being and communicate with the support team and family.
- Provide flexible availability for holiday cover, sickness cover, emergency cover, and support during client’s personal holidays (one week per year).
- Inform family or senior PA of any medications requiring re‑ordering.
- Maintain a clean driving licence.
- Perform day, evening, weekend, and day shift duties as required.
- Carry out routine daily domestic activities (making bed, keeping the home clean and tidy).
- Assist with Occupational Therapy/Speech Therapy sessions and record them (training provided).
- Facilitate social and leisure activities (walking, visiting museums, art galleries, hydro‑therapy swimming, theatre, dining out).
- Assist with any chosen activity, whether inside or outside the home.
- Help use iPad and Allora communication aid, and keep the technology up‑to‑date.
- Provide training and mentoring to new part‑time staff, including shadowing and on‑the‑job training.
- Maintain the car (inside, outside, servicing).
- Ensure personal belongings are kept safe at all times.
- Adhere to the risk assessment and Person‑Centered Plan (PCP) and update regularly.
- Assist with maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including dietary requirements and exercise needs.
- Maintain written records in diaries and communicate relevant information professionally and timely.
- Participate in identifying own training programmes constructively.
- Undertake any reasonable tasks as required from time to time.
