Senior Control & Protection System Application Engineer

This Senior Control & Protection System Application Engineer at GE Vernova will be responsible for the requirement definition, design, studies, validation, and commissioning of control & protection systems for VSC-based HVDC transmission schemes including MMC converter technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership & oversight, ensuring customer requirements are met based on reference solutions.
  • Lead requirements gathering, system design, implementation, and development of HVDC control & protection systems.
  • Review and approve technical documents such as control/protection settings, manuals, test plans, and procedures.
  • Serve as the primary customer interface for technical discussions, training, and requirement clarification.
  • Define control philosophies, protection and interlocking logics, and data exchange configurations.
  • Conduct advanced modelling & simulation, including electromagnetic transient studies with PSCAD, EMTP-RV and modelling control/protection functions in MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Perform network conversion, modelling, tuning, and verification using PSSE, PSCAD, and RSCAD; develop full plant/system models and lead validation across multiple simulation platforms.
  • Lead control system studies & testing activities: software‑in‑the‑loop (SIL), dynamic performance studies, protection coordination, overall system integration.
  • Conduct system testing & commissioning: IST, FST, FAT, SAT, and site commissioning, and lead root‑cause analysis of complex VSC control and protection issues.
  • Develop and mentor junior engineers, support managers in building high‑performing teams, and recruit, develop, and mentor engineering talent.
  • Identify and implement improvements in engineering tools, processes, systems, and technical solutions to enhance customer value and operational efficiency while upholding SQDC principles.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Education: Degree in Electronics/Electrical Engineering or equivalent proven experience in HVDC systems.
  • Experience: Minimum 12 years in HVDC control and protection system design.
  • Technical expertise in HVDC control, protection, sequencing strategies, dynamic performance studies and system modelling for VSC‑HVDC schemes.
  • Proficiency with PSCAD, EMTP‑RV, MATLAB/Simulink, PSSE, PSCAD, and RSCAD.
  • Strong technical leadership and communication skills, with ability to understand and convey customer requirements and develop client relationships.
  • Experience in cross‑functional collaboration, independent decision‑making, and engaging subject‑matter experts.
