Job Summary
This replacement post supports the Ophthalmology service primarily at Leighton Hospital, with additional sessions at Victoria Infirmary, Northwich. The successful candidate will lead the Corneal service, including outpatient clinics, laser, and theatre sessions in a full‑time role, with a potential for job share.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert medical and surgical management for corneal and external eye conditions such as keratoconus, corneal dystrophies, microbial keratitis, ocular surface inflammation and dry eye disease.
- Perform full‑thickness and lamellar corneal transplant surgery, including endothelial keratoplasty.
- Carry out other corneal procedures (e.g., pterygium surgery) and complex cataract surgery.
- Participate in general ophthalmology clinics, theatre lists and emergency eye care on a shared rota basis.
- Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams (optometrists, nurses, orthoptists and neighbouring units).
- Autonomously manage the majority of corneal patients within the service.
Qualifications & Experience
- Full GMC registration with licence to practice.
- MBBS and FRCophth or equivalent qualifications.
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT within 6 months of interview), CESR or European Community Rights.
- Significant experience in managing ophthalmic conditions with a strong subspecialty interest in cornea.
- Desirable: fellowship‑level training in cornea, PhD, MD or other high academic degree.
Essential Skills and Abilities
- Proven ability to conduct clinical and operative ophthalmology across all areas of the specialty.
- Commitment to effective departmental management and service improvement.
- Leadership skills with the ability to lead a team by positive example.
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff at all levels and with patients.
- Understanding of business planning and contracting.
- Experience in leading or facilitating change processes.
- Commitment to clinical risk management and clinical governance.
- Access to a serviceable vehicle and a valid driving licence.
Audit, Research, Teaching and Education
- Proven involvement in clinical audit.
- Track record of ophthalmology research with evidence of publications.
- Evidence to allow accreditation as a Consultant Clinical Supervisor for trainee doctors.
- Desirable: evidence for accreditation as a Consultant Educational Supervisor and a medical education qualification (preferably a Masters level).
Work Schedule and Compensation
Full‑time with potential for job share. Staff grade: Consultant. Salary range: £109,725 to £145,478 per year pro‑rata. Contract: Permanent.
