Senior Lawyer – Enforcement & Prosecution

We are looking for a senior lawyer to support our Enforcement and Prosecution teams, based in Peterborough or Warrington, with potential for Water Industry Enforcement roles. The role involves providing accurate, timely legal advice, delivering high‑quality casework, and managing a caseload with autonomy across criminal and civil proceedings, including representing the Environment Agency.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high‑level legal advice to relevant parts of the organisation.
  • Deliver effective legal casework and progress procedural issues.
  • Manage your own caseload, including complex criminal and civil proceedings.
  • Represent the Environment Agency in court.
  • Prepare complex cases for trial and sentence in Magistrates’ and Crown Courts.
  • Advise on civil sanctions and regulatory responses to environmental offences.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Qualified solicitor, barrister or equivalent (e.g., FILEX with rights of audience in criminal proceedings).
  • Experience as a prosecutor or defence lawyer handling complex criminal cases related to environmental legislation or other regulatory areas.
  • Sound knowledge of criminal law, practice and procedure.
  • Experience as a criminal advocate with trial experience in Magistrates’ Court and Crown Court.
  • Ability to prepare complex cases and advise on civil sanctions.

Benefits
