Checkout.com is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel with a strong payments regulatory and product background to join our Legal team. The role involves advising on compliance with financial services and payments regulations, interacting with regulators, and supporting regulatory projects and product launches across the group. The Senior Legal Counsel works closely with all areas of the business globally, taking a consultative and collaborative approach to solving complex legal and business issues in a fast‑moving environment. The position is based at Checkout’s offices in London.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with Commercial, Product, Treasury, Financial Partnerships and Compliance teams as a real‑time legal advisor to understand their needs and find creative solutions.
  • Support relationships with regulators on licence‑related matters, including potential de‑novo applications.
  • Review payments product structures, flows and terms to ensure compliance with legal requirements.
  • Advise on payments regulatory matters, including compliance with payments laws and related regulations across different jurisdictions.
  • Advise on broader regulatory requirements applicable to financial institutions, including group regulatory change projects.
  • Advise on market expansion, researching and evaluating new territories, and applying for new licences or expanding the scope of existing licences.
  • Advise key business functions on new regulatory developments impacting operations, products and contractual commitments.

Qualifications

  • Qualified solicitor/lawyer with 8+ years PQE and strong post‑qualification experience either in‑house or in private practice.
  • Strong understanding of legal principles applicable to payments, including the payments ecosystem and regulatory and licensing strategy, and broader financial institutions.
  • Previous FinTech, start‑up, payments and/or financial institution experience desirable.
  • Excellent time‑management skills and experience managing a diverse workload and competing stakeholder demands.
  • Ability to handle and deliver on numerous high‑priority projects concurrently.
  • Comfort with ambiguity, constant change, and a fast‑paced culture.
  • Practical, solutions‑oriented focus to solving legal challenges.
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively as needed, flexing the approach as the matter requires.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to articulate and explain complex legal issues clearly and concisely.
