Locum Consultant in Gynaecology (Reproductive Medicine) (9m Maternity Leave Cover)

Barts Health NHS Trust is welcoming applications for a full‑time 10PA locum consultant to join the Centre for Reproductive Medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, starting September 2026 for a 9‑month contract covering maternity leave.

The Fertility Service is one of the largest NHS services, providing secondary and tertiary diagnosis and treatment. It offers a full range of services including male and female outpatient diagnostic assessment, assisted reproduction technologies (IUI, IVF, ICSI, sperm and ovum donation, sperm retrieval techniques), fertility preservation for acute and chronic conditions (including oncological), specialised menopausal and gynae‑endocrinology and andrology clinics, and general benign gynaecological and reproductive surgery.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will join a senior team of three Subspeciality trained consultants and two Specialist Grade doctors, managing and training junior medical and nursing staff. The post holder will participate in all activities of the consultant‑led general fertility and assisted reproductive technology (ART) service, including outpatient clinics, theatre lists and IVF procedures (egg retrievals, embryo transfers, fertility scanning, etc.). The successful candidate will also support the senior team in providing on‑call cover for the Reproductive Medicine service during nights and weekends on a 1:6 basis.

Job responsibilities

As a member of the senior team within the Fertility Service, the successful candidate will be an active member of the Centre for Reproductive Medicine and help deliver the departmental mission of excellence in clinical care and teaching, provide clinical leadership, participate and lead in clinical audit activities, engage in trust clinical governance and HFEA requirements, foster improvements in clinical services, facilitate clinical research, liaise with primary and secondary care services, continually improve clinical performance, participate in the weekly vetting of referrals, report serious incidents to risk management, work with managers to achieve performance targets, undertake administrative duties, attend multidisciplinary team meetings, promote research and development, and manage junior staff.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MRCOG or equivalent
  • Full and specialist registration (licence to practice) with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • Equivalent of 12 years medical work (continuous period or aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification, with a minimum of seven years at Specialist Registrar level in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Completion or within 6 months of completion of RCOG Subspecialist Training in Reproductive Medicine and Surgery or equivalent

Desirable

  • Higher research degree (MD, PhD, MD‑Res)
  • Other qualifications that may enhance service provision (e.g., teaching qualification, management qualification)

Experience

Essential

  • Broad experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Minimum 2 years experience in Assisted Reproductive Techniques
  • Experience of independent Reproductive Medicine Surgery, MAS
  • Experience in gynaecological ultrasound
  • Able to take responsibility of service without direct supervision

Knowledge

Essential

  • Specialist experience and training in Reproductive Medicine
  • Excellent knowledge and experience in Assisted Reproductive Techniques
  • Knowledge of providing fertility preservation relevant to Assisted Reproductive Techniques

Desirable

  • Understanding of the clinical governance agenda
