Maintenance Craftsperson (Carpenter/Joiner)

City Hospitals Independent Commercial Enterprises Ltd (CHoICE) is a wholly owned subsidiary of South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust. The role will support CHoICE Facilities Services in providing hard and soft facility services at South Tyneside Hospital and associated sites.

Base salary range: £30,290 to £33,232. The role requires flexibility with regard to overtime, and additional monetary rewards are provided for emergency or scheduled work as needed.

Key responsibilities:

  • Plan and undertake reactive building maintenance activities.
  • Carry out joinery installations and other minor building related works.
  • Receive work orders via handheld device, prioritise daily tasks and ensure efficient completion.
  • Respond to emergencies and participate in the CFS shift pattern and on‑call rota.
  • Maintain accurate records, safety controls and comply with statutory and organisational standards.
  • Maintain clear communication with clinical and non‑clinical staff and service users.

Physical Skills

  • Able to travel and work at all Trust sites.
  • Capable of moderate physical activity for long periods.
  • Able to perform short, intensive bursts of effort when required.
  • Regularly perform moving, handling and fine‑tool manipulation tasks.
  • Requires developed physical dexterity and hand‑eye coordination.

Qualifications

  • Basic numeracy and literacy skills to level 1 or equivalent.
  • Basic IT skills.
  • BTEC/ONC, City & Guilds or NVQ level 3 in a relevant building discipline.
  • Completion of a recognised and accredited apprenticeship in a relevant building discipline.
  • Advanced craft certificate or NVQ level 4.
  • Relevant qualification for maintenance of fire doors.

Experience

  • Knowledge and experience of engineering and building systems typical in large NHS Acute Trusts.
  • Detailed knowledge and experience of joinery requirements and regulations within a large NHS Acute Trust.
  • Previous experience working within a similar maintenance environment.

  • Adapt to changing demands and react to emergencies.
  • Prioritise workload to meet high‑quality patient care and SLA targets.
  • Communicate routine and sensitive information with colleagues and external contacts.
  • Self‑motivated with a desire to improve practices.
  • Adopt a flexible approach to working hours and on‑call shift requirements.
  • Knowledge of HBMs and planned preventive maintenance systems.
