English Academic Coach

September 2026 to July 2027 • £90 – £110 per day • Good secondary school, Ward of Edgbaston • 1:1 and small group support across GCSE English

The Role

Work with the English department to provide targeted support for GCSE pupils who need extra help with reading, essay writing, analysis, and exam preparation. You will deliver 1:1 and small group intervention, reinforce learning from lessons, and feed back clearly to teachers on pupil progress. Teaching assistants support teachers to enhance pupils’ learning, while secondary teachers work with pupils aged 11 to 16, or up to 19 in schools with sixth forms.

The Candidate

You are articulate, organised, and able to explain ideas clearly in a way pupils understand. You want practical secondary school experience, enjoy helping students improve in English, and are keen to develop the classroom skills needed for a future in teaching.

Requirements

  • Degree – A 2:2 or above in any subject.
  • Communication – Clear and confident verbal and written communication.
  • Enhanced DBS – Must hold or be willing to obtain an Enhanced DBS certificate.
  • Desire to work in education/with children – Genuine interest in supporting pupil progress and wellbeing.
  • Career Goals – A desire to train as a teacher and build a long‑term career in education.

The School

This “Good” secondary school in the Ward of Edgbaston offers the chance to build valuable experience in a well‑run English department where targeted support matters. You will join a setting where intervention is purposeful, expectations are clear, and extra academic guidance is used to help pupils make measurable progress at GCSE. The school’s eligibility guidance for Enhanced DBS checks was updated on 20 January 2026 and remains the key guidance for roles working with children.
