We are one of the world’s leading research centres for the study of prions and their wider relevance to neurodegenerative disease with a growing research activity in Alzheimer’s disease (www.prion.ucl.ac.uk). The Institute is highly multidisciplinary with close integration of structural and molecular biology, genetics, cellular and animal models, small molecule and immuno‑therapeutics and clinical research. MRC and UCL have jointly invested £30 million in provision of a dedicated new building in central London for the Institute supporting the vision to expand research in protein misfolding and aggregation in neurodegenerative disease.
About the role
You will work under the supervision of Dr Gargi Banerjee within a research programme titled “The expanded prion paradigm and amyloid-beta diseases”. You will support a longitudinal cohort study investigating whether people previously treated with cadaveric human growth hormone have early signs of Alzheimer’s disease or CAA. Duties include clinical data collection and analysis, and patient and public engagement activities such as creating a peer‑support group for this cohort.
Qualifications
- Medical degree (MBBS, MB BCh, or equivalent) and GMC registration with a licence to practice (or eligibility for full GMC registration).
- Completed general medical training and the ability to work co‑operatively in a multidisciplinary team.
- Interest in translational clinical research in neurology and strong technical writing skills.
Employment terms
The post is funded by the Medical Research Council for one year, with a possible one‑year extension at a later stage. An honorary clinical contract will be sought from UCLH and any other Trusts where the postholder may provide input, and a DBS check will be required. The starting salary is £57,488 per annum (CL7.4 and StR Level 3) or £57,853 per annum (RDPS Nodal Point 3), inclusive of London Allowance.
