Principal Mechanical Design Engineer
£60,000 – £75,000 / annum + benefits
Marcus Webb Associates Limited is looking for an experienced mechanical design engineer to join our team in Derby, Derbyshire. The role is full‑time, office based, and offers a competitive salary, bonus, pension, health benefits, 33 days holiday, relocation assistance and visa sponsorship for the right candidate.
Role
You will be responsible for the concept design, development and delivery of hydrogen and diesel engine / powertrain systems and components from concept through launch. You will also ensure robust system/component regulations, quality, cost and timing requirements are met and lead a small team, mentoring junior engineers.
Responsibilities
- End‑to‑end mechanical design engineering activities (research, concept, 3D design, delivery, launch) for engine design, including valvetrain, timing gear systems, crankcase ventilation, aftertreatment, fuel systems (with hydrogen experience), air handling systems, etc.
- Support in‑house quality, manufacturing and service teams in resolving complex technical issues leading to engineering change.
- Create clean‑sheet concept designs from first principles and plan & execute proof‑of‑concept assessments via test campaigns and simulation.
- Support product development, ensuring design for assembly and achieving quality in design.
- Develop engine system and component specifications and designs based on agreed requirements with stakeholders.
- Assist with FMEAs and DVPs, coordinate and supervise DVP activities (analytical, simulation, rig/engine/machine testing).
- Resolve engineering issues using structured problem‑solving methodologies (Global 8D, DMAIC).
- Support suppliers via APQP process; deliver prototypes and PPAP parts on schedule and fulfil quality and performance requirements.
Qualifications
- A degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline.
- Sound understanding of the engine product development cycle and expertise in system & component specification, design, development and sign‑off.
- Broad understanding of dynamic, reciprocating/rotating systems.
- Ability to work well under pressure, meet deadlines, and communicate clearly at all levels.
- Proficiency in 2D CAD and 3D modelling packages (NX, Creo, Catia, SolidWorks, etc.) and knowledge of GD&T and manufacturing processes.
- Experience leading projects and mentoring junior engineers.
- Knowledge of engine cooling, thermodynamics, induction systems is beneficial.
