About the role
Balfour Beatty’s Regional Buildings division is seeking an experienced Bid Writer/Technical Author to join our team on site at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. This 23‑month fixed‑term role is central to supporting our internal SVA team as we deliver a significant programme of work within a complex, live healthcare environment. You’ll take ownership of producing high‑quality bid submissions, technical narratives, and project documentation that clearly articulate our approach, capability, and value. Working closely with preconstruction, design, and operational colleagues, you’ll help ensure our written outputs are accurate, compelling, and aligned with both client expectations and Balfour Beatty’s standards of excellence.
In liaison with the new dedicated SVA & Settlement Team, act as the Lead Author to manage the existing Operations team to produce new documents and/or review existing documentation to ensure professionally written and consistent content that clearly articulates Balfour Beatty’s proposition.
What you’ll be doing
- Assist the SVA Lead in developing a proposal structure and strategy
- Conduct answer planning sessions with team and supply chain
- Attend various Operational meetings to determine lessons learnt and ensure these are fed back into subsequent submissions
- Provide ‘one BB tone of voice’ across quality submissions and ensure no conflicts exist between constituent documents.
- Manage content and structure for evidence to be included in the SVA
- Proactively develop and manage individual site team subject matter experts, and drive continuous improvement
- Coordinate and manage response review sessions
- Identify and re‑work existing pre‑written content where relevant
- Support with submission graphics and final documents upload
- Ability to coach operational teams and subject matter experts in writing best practice
- Support with SVA Contract and systems administration
- Provide guidance, mentoring and support for individuals in the Pre Con team.
Who we’re looking for
- Proven skills in producing and editing proposal content within a complex business environment.
- Design sensibilities, and the ability to edit submissions while keeping the essentials of the bid intact
- Experienced in leading answer planning sessions, participating in key review meetings / final document review, content sign off and document production.
- Experience of coordinating and updating a knowledge base system is beneficial.
- Excellent writing skills and ability to communicate professionally with colleagues at all levels of the business
- Collate individual proposal document using existing library/information stores, and corporate directories into a coherent SVA document, and individual Settlement Contracts where applicable.
- Ability to work collaboratively with existing internal department disciplines and external supply chain experts.
- Assist in the drafting and standardizing of Pro‑forma documentation
- Understanding of the principles of BIM and 4P as relate to the submissions
- Forensic attention to detail and meticulous proofreading skills
