Head of Insurance and Underwriting Risk

Edenbrook are working with a leading specialty Insurer/Re-Insurer on a Head of Insurance and Underwriting Risk hire. This role provides second-line oversight and challenge across underwriting risk, model governance and validation, ORSA, capital modelling, and risk appetite. You will shape risk frameworks, influence strategic decisions, and ensure strong governance across a global insurance platform.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide independent challenge across underwriting, reserving, pricing, capital modelling, reinsurance, and exposure management
• Oversee development, validation, and governance of internal models (including catastrophe and stochastic models)
• Define and monitor risk appetite, key metrics, and portfolio exposures
• Lead capital analysis, stress and scenario testing

ORSA

• Lead the Own Risk & Solvency Assessment (ORSA) process
• Produce clear, board-ready risk opinions, analysis, and reporting

Reporting & Stakeholder Engagement

• Report capital, model, and exposure insights to senior committees and the Board
• Partner with underwriting, actuarial, finance, and exposure teams to ensure alignment on assumptions and risk views

Leadership & Governance

• Lead and develop a team covering underwriting risk, model validation, and ORSA
• Promote strong risk culture and consistent governance standards
• Ensure regulatory compliance and readiness for audit

Strategic Contribution

• Provide risk input into strategic decisions and transformation initiatives
• Assess emerging risks and industry developments to refine risk appetite
