About The Division
The Water Utilities Division is Mott MacDonald’s centre of excellence for responding to the UK and Ireland’s water and wastewater challenges. The work we do is at the forefront of ensuring safe water supplies for future generations, preventing urban flooding, and improving the health of our rivers and coastal environments. Our multi‑disciplinary teams provide a variety of services throughout the full project life cycle, from advisory services and feasibility studies to outline and detailed design. Together, we deliver best‑in‑class solutions to our clients while offering diverse and technically stimulating opportunities to our people.
Overview Of The Role
Our Asset Management and Infrastructure Planning team is one of five sub‑sectors within our Water Utilities Division, which employs around 350 people across the UK. We work in the water sector and with other infrastructure providers both in the UK and internationally in the following workstream areas:
- Technical assurance of statutory regulatory submissions such as annual performance reporting, business cases and business plans, long‑term strategic plans, operational performance and deliverables
- Water resource investment planning
- Wastewater and bioresources investment planning
- Strategic asset management and business planning
- Carbon and net zero appraisal and strategic planning
- Integrated systems management
- Data analytics and decision support tools
- Contract’s appraisal (NEC, PPP)
We are growing our asset management consultancy services for the UK Water Industry. Due to successfully winning positions on strategic frameworks we have a number of opportunities for experienced asset management professionals to join our team.
We are specifically seeking a Principal Asset Management Advisor in our Regulation workstream predominantly supporting our clients with economic regulation. You will support the regulator through the PR29 cycle to assess company submissions and provide technical expertise in various policy areas such as investment proposal assessment, reconciliation of incentives and company performance & delivery. You will also support our water company clients improve their asset management and investment planning capabilities, helping them to make and document better investment decisions. This includes preparing high‑quality regulatory submissions.
Following the findings of the Independent Water Commission (IWC) review, the regulatory environment is expected to undergo significant and rapid change. This is an exciting opportunity for you to support our clients adapt and navigate through this evolving regulatory change.
You will be sharing your asset management expertise with peers and mentoring junior staff. Reporting to the Workstream Lead, you will be an important part of our investment planning team and the wider asset management practice community.

Candidate specification
Essential
- Excellent knowledge of economic regulatory requirements and the wider landscape in the England & Wales water sector
- Excellent knowledge of Asset Management, ideally an Institute of Asset Management certificate / diploma
- Excellent knowledge of investment planning practices in the water sector
- Critical thinking and analytical skills
- Excellent communication skills; particularly of highly technical analysis to non‑technical audiences, e.g. report writing and presentations
- Able to work within a team and motivate others to deliver to high standards
- Regulatory planning cycle of business plan or business case development for companies and/or assessment of plans for regulators
- Development of asset management strategic or tactical plans within an infrastructure owning organisation
- Broad knowledge of and experience with a large range of technical disciplines; Water resource management plans, drainage and wastewater management plans, cost‑benefit analysis, development of value frameworks or data management and visualisation
Desirable
- Engineering or other technical background and qualifications
- Certificate or Diploma in Asset Management from the Institute of Asset Management
- Chartership with a relevant environmental or asset management professional institution
- Project management, client liaison and consulting
