Scala Developer (Reference Data / Global Markets Technology)
The Opportunity
We’re looking for a Scala Developer to join a Global Technology Architecture, Strategy & Core function within a leading global financial services organisation, based in South London.
This team builds core shared platforms and strategic architecture solutions used across Global Banking & Markets. Specifically, you’ll join the EMEA Reference Data team, which delivers technology solutions supporting reference data across Global Markets.
You’ll work on large-scale, globally deployed systems, contributing to key regulatory and strategic technology programmes within a highly regulated enterprise environment.
What You’ll Do
- Design and develop applications primarily using Scala (Java considered if willing to transition to Scala)
- Work across the full software development lifecycle (design, build, test, release)
- Analyse business and technical requirements and turn them into scalable solutions
- Build and enhance components within the Reference Data technology stack
- Work with Big Data and distributed technologies
- Contribute to regulatory-driven technology initiatives
- Collaborate within Agile development teams
- Take ownership of tasks and drive them through to completion
Key Technical Requirements
- Strong Scala development skills (preferred) OR strong Java with willingness to learn Scala
- Solid SQL skills and experience with at least one relational database (RDBMS)
- Understanding of build and release management (e.g., ANT or similar tools)
- Good understanding of unit testing concepts
- Familiarity with software development patterns
- Experience or exposure to Big Data technologies (e.g., Apache Hadoop)
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with RDF and SPARQL
- Understanding of the Reference Data domain
- Exposure to functional programming
- Previous experience in financial services or regulatory-driven environments
Soft Skills Required
- Ability to take ownership of complex tasks and deliver results
- Comfortable working in a collaborative team environment
- Awareness of the operational side of managing production systems
- Self-starter mindset and willingness to learn new technologies
