Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Essex
Salary: £30,000 – £45,000 per annum

We are currently looking to recruit a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering team in Essex. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing mechanical designs and drawings for a range of mechanical systems and equipment, working within a team of mechanical design engineers on varied engineering projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with internal departments to design parts, assemblies and equipment layouts
- Produce detailed manufacturing drawings and supporting documentation including bills of materials (BOMs), sub-assembly drawings, schematics and schedules
- Maintain and update standard machine builds and library components to ensure consistency across projects
- Update and maintain mechanical drawings and documentation for equipment upgrades and modifications
- Develop and implement mechanical design standards, processes and procedures
- Maintain accurate 3D CAD models, assemblies and associated engineering documentation
- Ensure drawings and documentation are updated and shared with relevant departments throughout the project lifecycle
- Support drawing control, document management and revision control using Autodesk Vault
- Liaise with the Drawing Office Manager to manage workload, project timelines and design deliverables
- Ensure legacy part and assembly data is maintained and updated to meet system requirements
- Maintain accurate item and assembly information within engineering systems
- Follow drawing office procedures and engineering standards at all times
- Apply good health and safety practices in all engineering activities
Skills and Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
- Previous mechanical design experience within an industrial or manufacturing environment
- Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor (3D), Autodesk AutoCAD (2D) and Autodesk Vault
- Experience with other CAD systems such as SolidWorks will also be considered
- Knowledge of geometrical tolerancing and design (GT&D)
- Strong understanding of BS 8888 drafting standards
- Good understanding of machining, sheet metal and fabrication processes
- Ability to interpret complex equipment assembly drawings and produce accurate technical documentation
- Familiarity with automated machinery, capital equipment or industrial systems
- Experience working on engineer-to-order projects with longer project timelines
- Knowledge of ERP/MRP systems such as Business Central is beneficial
- Previous workshop, manufacturing or apprenticeship-based engineering experience is advantageous
