Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine – York Hospital

The post holder will carry out duties as a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine. This position is based at York Hospital.
York Intensive Care Unit currently admits around 1000 patients per year and is staffed to a dependency of 12 level 3 beds. It is a beautifully spacious unit with 22 physical bed spaces, 12 of which are side rooms. The unit uses a high‑performance Clinical Information System and has excellent conferencing and staff facilities. Prospective candidates are strongly encouraged to visit and view the unit.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will carry out the duties of a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine to deliver high quality patient care. This involves ward rounds, managing critical care referrals, and delivering the critical care services for the hospital.
You will join 20 ICM Consultants who work within the Trust. ICM Consultants have a primary base at either York or Scarborough – 6 based at Scarborough and 14 at York. Both sites work collaboratively. All ICM Consultants attend weekly Grand Round meetings (M&M / clinical decision meetings) where ICU patients and complex decisions are discussed, and monthly ICU Governance meetings.

Job Title: Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine
The post holder will carry out the duties of a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine to deliver high quality patient care. This involves ward rounds, managing critical care referrals, and delivering the critical care services for the hospital.
Work base location: York Hospital
Average weekly programmed activities: 10 PA
Up to 2 additional programmed activities may be offered to the post holder based on a separate agreement.
The current York Intensive Care rota represents 5.29 PA of Intensive Care work.
Job plans can be created for single stream applicants or applicants from different dual speciality backgrounds. Cross‑site work is required in line with current patterns within the department.
The standard core SPA: 1.25 PA week
There may be an opportunity to increase SPA, where needed, in line with departmental objectives.
The on‑call rota: based on a 1:14 ICU rota. The post holder participates in the on‑call rota at York Hospital. The rota is currently defined as a Category A rota. Unpredictable on‑call is determined and subject to the NHS standard hours monitoring exercise.
Individual job plans: Single stream and dual job plans can be discussed and tailored with the Clinical Director. Job plans become operational on commencement and are agreed in line with the Trust’s job‑planning principles.

Experience and Knowledge
Essential
- Able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and skill
- Knowledge of good medical practice and GMC requirements.
- Commitment to Continuing Medical Education and the requirements of Clinical Governance and audit.
- Experience in teaching & supervising medical students and junior trainees.
- Able to teach clinical skills.
- Able to critically review and apply research to clinical situations.
- Experience of undertaking audits and presenting their findings.
- Written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients & colleagues.
- Able to communicate effectively with multi‑disciplinary team members, patients, relatives, GPs and other agencies.
- Able & willing to take on leadership roles.
- Strategic thinker with enquiring, critical approach to work.
- Capable of building trust and confidence.

Qualifications and Training
Essential
- MRCP or equivalent qualification.
- Eligible for full GMC registration with license to practice.
- Entry on the relevant GMC Specialist Register via: CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) or CESR.
- Is up to date and fit to practise safely.
Desirable
- MD or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research in the specialty.
- Higher teaching qualification.
