About this job

We’re seeking a Consultant Stroke Physician to become part of our established stroke department at North Bristol NHS Trust to contribute to the growth and strategic development of our services.

Our focus is on driving improvement within acute stroke services for Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG), alongside extending support to the wider Severn Region and beyond, encompassing advanced procedures such as Mechanical Thrombectomy (performed 24/7). Since May 2023, our Comprehensive Stroke Centre, based at the Brunel Building, Southmead Hospital, has been the hub of stroke care in the region, with the expansion of our Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU) and Acute Stroke Unit (ASU). We deliver the highest number of thrombectomies in the UK. The successful candidate will support the delivery of acute services, partake in Monday‑Friday transient ischaemic attack (TIA) clinics, and handle ward referrals at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

Additionally, participation in bi‑weekly ward consultant rounds at the Stroke Sub‑Acute Rehab Unit (SSARU) located at Weston General Hospital will be expected.

This position offers an opportunity to be part of an evolving landscape in stroke care, contributing to its growth and optimisation.

Join us as we build on high‑quality care, working as a team to enhance stroke services and make a meaningful impact in healthcare.

Clinical duties

  • Management of acute admissions
  • Thrombolysis and thrombectomy
  • Supervising the care of all patients in HASU and ASU, along with colleagues ensuring continuity of care for patients
  • Providing bi‑weekly consultant‑level input to patients cared for in the SSARU at Weston General Hospital / South Bristol Community Hospital
  • Delivery of TIA (at Bristol Royal Infirmary) / neurovascular outpatient clinics

Supervision and education

  • Clinical and educational supervision of juniors including senior clinical fellows
  • Contribution to training and education of the stroke team

Clinical Audit & Research

Applicants should have a CCT or be within six months of achieving this at the date of interview or be listed on the GMC’s specialist register to be eligible for application for a substantive post.

CESR applicants are welcome and must have their CESR in place at the time of interview.

  • 24‑hour acute thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy
  • Hyperacute and acute stroke care
  • TIA clinics at Bristol Royal Infirmary
  • Sub‑acute stroke rehabilitation at South Bristol Community Hospital and Weston General Hospital

The department’s large consultant team comes from Neurology, Acute Medicine, and Care of the Elderly, leading the Trust’s Comprehensive Stroke Centre and covering both acute and rehabilitation services.

Additional information

We also have invested in Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs) and Physician Associates.

Relocation expenses may be supported (details available on request). Please see the attached job description for the main responsibilities of the role.

The successful applicant will be a team player and willing to work flexibly to provide cover for other consultants covering the Stroke Services.

The job plan and clinic commitment will be adapted to suit the appointee.

Please discuss interests with our Specialty Lead before applying.

Neurology, Care of the Elderly, and Acute Medicine PAs may form part of the job plan for the successful candidates.
