The Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering (EEE) at UCL was established by Professor Sir Ambrose Fleming, inventor of the thermionic valve and hence the founder of the discipline of electronics, in 1885 as the first department of electrical technology in England. That same pioneering tradition of innovation and excellence continues to underpin our work. We push in new directions across research, education and entrepreneurship, building on our long-established links with industry and benefitting from our loyal and supportive alumni community. We are committed to develop individuals and careers, across staff and students, developing and supporting our subject discipline.
The post holder will be the senior technician in the Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) facility, under the direction of the facility research lead and managed by the Research Laboratories Manager. They will manage most aspects of the installation, maintenance, and usage of MBE equipment and the associated plant.
Acting a senior operator of the MBE equipment, the postholder will be part of a team of student and staff operators, for the production of semiconductor wafers for research and commercial purposes.
In addition, they will manage and arrange the maintenance of the safety systems for the laboratory and act as coordinator for equipment & safety documentation. They will conduct training on the MBE systems and for other specialist equipment in the facility for new users.
Applicants should have a degree level qualification in engineering or a related discipline. The postholder must have experience maintaining and using a variety of pumps, regulators, chillers and vacuum equipment. They should have experience of working in a cleanroom environment and a firm understanding of III-V and group-IV MBE and/or other wafer growth processes with direct practical experience. The postholder should be the main point of contact to raise issues with estates-maintained equipment, experience raising maintenance request and dealing with contractors is therefore essential.
