Location: Bristol
Job Description:

Overview

Join a forward-thinking NHS Trust in an exciting new opportunity as Consultant Psychiatrist for the North Bristol Crisis Team. This well-established service operates within a strong multidisciplinary team, bringing together doctors, non-medical prescribers, senior nurses, a psychotherapist, and support workers. The team works closely with colleagues in the Recovery Team, the Complex Psychological Interventions service, and the local Assertive Outreach Team, ensuring seamless communication and collaborative care. Based at Gloucester House on the Southmead Hospital site, this newly created post arises from a recent medical workforce review and reflects the Trust’s commitment to strengthening acute and crisis care provision. The post holder will work alongside an existing full-time Consultant Psychiatrist to expand and further develop the service.

As the designated gatekeeper for hospital admissions, the Crisis Team plays a pivotal role in coordinating acute care. The Consultant will build strong working relationships with inpatient teams to support timely admissions and facilitate safe, effective discharge planning. The medical component of the team currently includes one 1.0 WTE General Adult Consultant and a cohort of trainees. The addition of this three-day-per-week Consultant post will further strengthen what is already a friendly, dynamic, and well-supported medical group. The Consultant will provide direct clinical interventions, including emergency assessment, at an intensity proportionate to service user need. This includes working with individuals who may be difficult to engage and who require an assertive approach. The role encompasses ongoing assessment, formulation, diagnosis, and treatment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct clinical interventions, including emergency assessment, at an intensity proportionate to service user need, including working with individuals who may be difficult to engage and who require an assertive approach.
  • Ongoing assessment, formulation, diagnosis, and treatment.
  • Offer visible, effective leadership within the multidisciplinary team and participate in gatekeeping responsibilities and attendance at Mental Health Act assessments where appropriate.
  • Manage a caseload of up to eight patients per week, including one to two urgent cases; conduct telephone reviews when clinically indicated.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of acute care services in line with best practice and nationally accredited standards; participate in acute care pathway meetings and identify service users requiring timely access to inpatient or recovery services; support safe and appropriate discharge planning.
  • Attend daily team handover meetings; provide cross-cover for other Consultants within the sector as needed.
  • Provide strong medical leadership and contribute to the strategic development of the service.
  • Work flexibly as part of the three-day-per-week Consultant post, alongside an existing full-time Consultant.
