Senior Specialist Biomedical Scientist/Quality Manager

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, experienced and friendly Biomedical Scientist to join the Cellular Pathology team at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital.

The successful applicant will be a suitably qualified and experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with post registration experience in Biomedical Science. You must possess a relevant professional qualification to degree level or equivalent, and hold a relevant MSc or equivalent.

As a Senior Specialist BMS, you will assist the Lead BMS and other senior grade staff in the management of the department’s sections. You will manage and deploy staff within a section(s) of work assigned to you. You will be familiar with the application of Trust policies, e.g. health and safety, HR (personnel), and ensure that these policies are adhered to by yourself and the staff in your section. You may be required to deputise for the Lead BMS for Cellular Pathology at RJAH in their absence and take direct responsibility for the department. You will provide cover for other Senior Specialists within your department.

The department is an approved IBMS/HCPC training laboratory and continuous professional development is actively encouraged.

Main duties of the job

As a Senior Specialist BMS, you are able to perform and understand the interpretation of a wide range of specialist laboratory tests, which are undertaken in the various sections of the Department. Routinely, you undertake the day-to-day management and supervision of a section(s) of work, or group of staff in the department.

You will perform a range of activities and provide highly specialist advice to clinicians and other service users. You will be responsible for delivering training to Specialist Diploma level within your area of expertise. You will lead a specialist section of the department and will ensure that all aspects of the technical performance of that area are of the highest standard. You will undertake equipment evaluation and activities which underpin the appropriate selection of methodologies and/or adaptation of procedures used in the department. You will drive service improvements and innovation within your specialist section of the department.

Pathology provides pathology services to the Trust and Shropshire County CCG, Telford and Wrekin CCG, Powys Teaching Health Board, Powys Healthcare Trust, and the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, amongst others.

Our two Hospitals, The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford are just a 20 minute drive apart.

This is an exciting time to join the Shrewsbury & Telford NHS Trust which is undergoing a period of transformational change following £312m of NHSE capital investment. This will fund significant infrastructural development with a strong focus on improving patient safety and offering care closer to home which includes the provision of cancer care.

The Cellular Pathology department at The Royal Shrewsbury and Telford also manages the cellular pathology services at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic hospital in Oswestry.

Qualifications

  • BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science or related subject
  • Registered with HCPC as Biomedical Scientist
  • MSc or equivalent in relevant discipline
  • Evidence of relevant CPD
  • Membership of the Institute of Biomedical Science
  • Certificate of Expert Practice in Quality Management, Training, or Leadership and Management
  • Higher Specialist Diploma in relevant discipline

Experience

  • Extensive post registration experience in laboratory setting in relevant discipline
  • Experience of supervising junior grades of staff
  • Extensive cellular pathology experience within a NHS setting.
  • Familiar with current laboratory instrumentation
  • Use of Quality Management IT system

Skill

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Able to train and mentor staff in relevant discipline
  • Demonstrates ability to keep calm in difficult situations or discussing contentious issues
  • Demonstrates ability to take ownership of issues including equipment faults, incidents and complex requests
  • Evidence of contributing to service improvement

Knowledge

  • Understanding of laboratory Health & Safety
  • Good working knowledge of Word and Excel
  • Knowledge of Quality Management Systems, Quality Assurance & Laboratory accreditation
  • Knowledge of Pathology IT systems
  • IOSH
