Solution Architect – Logistics / WMS Modernisation (Contract)
Duration: 6–12 months
Location: UK (Onsite collaboration required – Holborn & Coventry as needed)
Engagement: Via leading consultancy supporting a major UK supermarket
The Opportunity
This is a hands-on architecture role sitting at the centre of a complex transformation programme within a major UK retailer.
You’ll be brought in to untangle legacy mainframe dependencies and drive the transition toward a modern, scalable warehouse and logistics ecosystem. It’s not a clean slate. It’s a high‑stakes environment where operational continuity matters just as much as technical ambition.
Expect ambiguity, competing priorities, and plenty of stakeholders with opinions.
Scope of the Role

- Lead mainframe modernisation and decommissioning efforts, from assessment through to cutover
- Ensure alignment and integration across ERP, TMS, OMS, and automation platforms
- Translate business and operational requirements into pragmatic, deliverable solution designs
- Govern architecture through design reviews, risk management, and technical assurance
- Support delivery teams with issue resolution, impact analysis, and change control
- Communicate clearly with senior stakeholders, cutting through noise and focusing on outcomes
What They Need You To Bring
- Strong track record in mainframe modernisation / decommissioning programmes
- Re‑platforming
- Data archival and retention
- Deep understanding of warehouse operations and logistics processes
- Hands‑on experience with WMS platforms:
- Blue Yonder and/or
- Solid grasp of modern architecture principles:
- Microservices
- API‑led and event‑driven architectures
- Experience analysing legacy systems, data structures, and dependencies
- Proven ability to govern data migration, validation, and cutover activities
- Comfortable working across conceptual, logical, and physical architecture layers
- Strong stakeholder management. You’ll need to influence, not just design
Environment & Ways of Working
- Onshore presence required for key workshops and planning sessions (Holborn & Coventry)
- Working within a multi‑vendor, cross‑functional delivery model
- Tools: Jira, Confluence, Miro (standard, but you’d be surprised how many struggle here)
- Prior experience within retail or grocery supply chains
