Laboratory Manager – Job Description

Wood is currently recruiting for a Laboratory Manager to be based at SAGE St Fergus Site.

The Laboratory Manager must hold a degree in Chemical Sciences (or a related scientific discipline) and has extensive experience in the day‑to‑day operation of a self‑sufficient laboratory environment. Candidates must possess strong knowledge of laboratory sampling, analysis, and reporting requirements within a gas processing site, ensuring compliance with operational and regulatory standards.

The Role

The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the day‑to‑day running of the Terminal Laboratory. They will ensure that all work carried out by laboratory personnel conforms to the requirements of the Quality System and to those of Wood and all accreditation bodies and shall act as the UKAS Technical and Quality Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure on a day‑to‑day basis that the UKAS Accreditation Standard ISO 17025 requirements are met.
  • Day‑to‑day running of the Terminal Laboratory.
  • Provide training and technical assistance to laboratory personnel.
  • Perform sampling, analysis and report results as required in accordance with procedures.
  • Ensure all work by laboratory personnel conforms to the Quality System and accreditation bodies.
  • Continually develop, implement and improve laboratory policies, procedures, and work instructions.
  • Organise purchases with site Administrators, requesting quotes and ordering consumables and equipment.
  • Assist in the investigation of accidents and incidents.
  • Develop, document and deliver Toolbox Talks.
  • Raise any health, safety, and environmental questions or queries from laboratory personnel to site management.
  • Become familiar with Health, Safety & Environment information issued by Wood.
  • Report all accidents, incidents and near misses according to Wood procedures.
  • Ensure correct Personal Protective Equipment is worn as required.
  • Oversee sampling, analysis and reporting carried out by laboratory personnel.
  • Supervise laboratory personnel and vendors during execution of their work.
  • Liaise with Operations and Maintenance departments during execution of laboratory activities.

Skills and Experience

  • Degree in chemical sciences or another scientific discipline.
  • Experience in the day‑to‑day running of a self‑sufficient laboratory.
  • Knowledge of laboratory sampling, analysis and reporting requirements for a gas processing site.
  • Knowledge of ensuring that the UKAS Accreditation Standard ISO 17025 requirements are met on a day‑to‑day basis in a laboratory.
  • Technical expertise to aid site personnel.
  • Experience of training and continual development of personnel.
  • Aware of the hazards and safety requirements associated with a gas processing terminal and laboratory processes.
  • Developing COSHH Assessments.
  • Developing Risk Assessments.
  • Developing and raising permits within the Integrated Safe System of Work process.
