About the role

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) for ME/CFS/FMS reports directly to the deputy matron for specialist services. They work alongside other professionals and experts in ME/CFS/FMS including the Clinical Lead, physicians, general manager and Allied Health Professionals. The CNS acts as an expert resource in ME/CFS/FMS management by working closely with patients, carers, consultants, GPs, therapists, social services and other stakeholders across primary and secondary care. The post holder will support the continuing progression of patient care and management within the hospital setting, while promoting and maintaining independence and self‑management. They will work with the specialist team to develop and implement a service that is in line with NICE guidance and which supports multidisciplinary teams.

The CNS will support nurse‑led clinics at the RLHIM contributing to the best care for people with ME/CFS/FMS. The post holder will provide both face‑to‑face and virtual support to patients and will independently conduct clinics to assess, review and monitor patients’ progress. The CNS will be responsible for accurately recording and interpreting patient outcome measures, as well as actively collecting and auditing data to inform service development and improvements. In addition to their clinic duties, the CNS will train and educate patients on managing their condition.

Key responsibilities

  • Practice autonomously and be self‑directed.
  • Undertake assessment of individuals using a range of different assessment methods, which may include physical examination, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests or advanced health needs assessment.
  • Draw on a diverse range of knowledge in decision‑making to determine evidence‑based therapeutic interventions; actively monitor the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions.
  • Prescribe appropriately for patients and within the individual’s scope of practice if a qualified independent non‑medical prescriber.
  • Run nurse‑led clinics for patients.
  • Provide direct advice to GPs and other allied health professionals.
  • Assist with teaching and training of healthcare professionals on ME/CFS/FMS within the trust and outside agencies.
  • Assist in the provision of inpatient referrals.
  • Provide education to patients, families and healthcare professionals.
  • Be a visible presence on the hospital wards, providing information and support to patients and staff.

Main duties continued

  • Assist in clinical trials, audits and research into ME/CFS/FMS and future management.
  • Provide a nurse‑led telephone clinic, assessing patient needs and requirements and acting accordingly.
  • Contribute to the development of services for people with ME/CFS/FMS.
  • Participate in Multidisciplinary assessment clinics.
  • Maintain skills and experience in management of epilepsy services and facilitate the implementation of the UCLH Nursing & Midwifery strategy.
  • Review ME/CFS/FMS nursing practice and implement appropriate changes based on research/best practice.
  • Develop and implement Audit, Quality and Risk Management initiatives within the ME/CFS/FMS service.
  • Participate in a programme of self‑development, clinical supervision and individual performance review (IPR).
  • Work within the guidelines established by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) including The Code and Scope of Professional Practice and all Trust guidelines.
  • Promote and maintain effective communication.
