Job Description:

Head of Shafts – Major Infrastructure Programme London (North Acton) | Permanent

An opportunity has arisen for a Head of Shafts to join a major infrastructure programme in London, delivering a portfolio of complex heavy civils works within a Tier 1 principal contractor environment. This role will oversee delivery across four major projects (circa £200M each), including shaft construction, underground interfaces, reinforced concrete structures and associated civil works. While only one shaft involves excavation, the role requires broad experience across large-scale infrastructure delivery and multi-site management.

The Role

You will provide leadership across multiple project teams, acting as the senior point of coordination for delivery, programme performance and risk management.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading delivery across multiple concurrent infrastructure projects and sites
  • Overseeing works including shaft construction, deep excavations, RC structures, secondary lining and underground interfaces
  • Managing Senior Project Managers and multidisciplinary delivery teams
  • Ensuring alignment across design, pre‑construction, construction and handover phases
  • Driving performance across programme, cost, quality and safety metrics
  • Acting as the escalation point for technical, commercial and delivery risks
  • Managing interfaces between contractors, stakeholders and supply chain partners
  • Embedding best practice in health, safety, quality and continuous improvement

About You

This role would suit a Senior Project Manager stepping into a broader leadership role, or an experienced Project Director with a background in major infrastructure delivery.

You will have:

  • Proven experience delivering large-scale infrastructure or heavy civils projects (£100M‑£200M+)
  • Strong understanding of construction methodologies for complex civil engineering works
  • Experience working within a Tier 1 / principal contractor environment
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple sites, packages or project portfolios
  • Strong leadership capability with experience managing matrix teams and senior stakeholders
  • Experience working under NEC contracts, with strong commercial awareness
  • An engineering degree (civil, structural or related discipline)
  • Experience on major UK programmes such as HS2, Crossrail, Tideway or similar is highly desirable.

What’s on Offer

  • Salary of around £80‑100K
  • Opportunity to work on a high-profile infrastructure programme in London
  • Clear progression pathway into a Project Director role
  • Long‑term programme stability within a major delivery organisation
  • This is a permanent role.
