The Road Safety Group are currently recruiting for a Road Safety Engineer. The team work to reduce the number of people seriously injured or killed on our roads.

The role will work to create and deliver effective interventions to reduce casualties and support active travel across the county. You will support the identification and feasibility of road safety schemes by analysing collision and casualty data and assessing risk to road users and recommend appropriate interventions.

The role will include undertaking walked and driven site inspections, risk assessments, and safety audits, which may mean being exposed to unpleasant environmental conditions, due to being outside and on busy highways, and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment. You’ll need to be able to travel independently to various meeting venues and other locations across the county. The Opportunity

In this role, you will work as part of a team to contribute to the development of road safety projects and initiatives. You’ll do this by analysing collision and casualty data and assessing risk to road users. You will need to create and issue project briefs and oversee the design and delivery of the resultant scheme. You will need to undertake regular site visits and maintain project records.

You will need to develop and maintain a high level of expertise in road safety and traffic engineering principles. You will use this knowledge to communicate specialist, technical advice to a range of stakeholders and ensure you maintain these relationships.

About you

Some of the key skills, experience and knowledge required to be successful in the role include:

  • Developed analytical and judgement skills to analyse and interpret complex data and assess risk. You will also be able to identify problems, plan solutions and then deliver these whilst keeping in mind the impact on the service.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbally, so that you can provide clear, specialist technical advice and guidance to various stakeholders. You will also be able to create and maintain effective working relationships with these stakeholders.
  • Excellent literacy and numeracy skills to prepare various documents required in the role and you will possess the IT skills needed to deliver these too, which needs to include CAD or GIS computer systems.
  • Excellent customer service skills that enable you to review processes and seek continuous improvement for your work and that of the wider team to better serve your customers.
  • Ability to plan your workload and manage conflicting priorities to meet objectives and that of external stakeholders too.
  • Experience of working in a highway, transport or planning discipline with sound technical knowledge of road safety including behavioural change techniques.

The Road Safety Group is a part of Transport and Network Operations within the Highways, Transport & Planning directorate. The Transport and Network Operations Service delivers home to school transport, network management, parking management, sustainable travel infrastructure improvements and road safety.

The team are working to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured while traveling on our roads. Improving air quality and delivering new active travel schemes are also key targets for West Sussex. The Road Safety Group includes a variety of colleagues all playing their part such as road safety engineering and behavioural change professionals, and cycle trainers, delivering safety engineering schemes and providing education, training, and publicity programmes to support safe and alternative transport choices.
