Lightricity is a high-tech SME which has developed ultra-high efficiency light (photovoltaic) energy harvesting technologies for IoT and space applications. Our indoor PV technology provides power to smart devices and sensors without the need for disposable batteries, providing a sustainable and cost-effective solution for powering billions of smart devices and sensors. Our outdoor PV technology has state-of-the-art performance and provides electrical power for micro-satellites and UAVs

Lightricity is seeking an Optoelectronic Device (Solar Cell) Engineer to advance our high-efficiency photovoltaic technology platforms. The role encompasses the development, fabrication and characterisation of high-efficiency devices for indoor & outdoor IoT environments and for aerospace applications. This role involves hands-on device processing, optimising device performance and characterisation in our laboratories. The successful candidate should enjoy hands-on activities and have a relevant science or engineering degree.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and simulation of solar cell structures to achieve world-class efficiencies for specific applications
  • Develop and refine semiconductor microfabrication processes in a cleanroom environment
  • Perform comprehensive optoelectronic characterisation of optoelectronic devices / solar cells
  • Plan and execute reliability and environmental testing, ensuring devices meet applicable requirements
  • Contribute to the company’s R&D projects
  • Write technical documentation, specifications and test reports

Required skills/experience:

  • Degree in physics, materials science, electrical engineering or a related discipline (MSc or PhD desirable)
  • Strong understanding of semiconductor device physics, specifically solar cells or optoelectronic devices
  • Hands-on experience with semiconductor microfabrication techniques in a cleanroom environment, including photolithography, wet/dry etching, dielectric and metal deposition
  • Experience with device characterisation (e.g. material and structural analysis, optoelectronic characterisation)
  • Ability to work under own initiative and manage workload to meet tight project deadlines
  • Eligible to work in the UK

Desirable skills/experience:

  • Experience with advanced optoelectronic characterisation (solar simulators, quantum efficiency measurements)
  • Experience with processing and analysis of large experimental datasets (e.g. in Python)
  • Familiarity with TCAD semiconductor modelling or simulation software
  • Knowledge of material epitaxy
  • Familiarity with space industry standards or Assembly, Integration and Test (AIT) principles

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary
  • Workplace pension
