Senior Protection & Control Engineer

Contract – Outside IR35

Substation Refurbishment Programme

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Protection & Control Engineer to support a programme of substation refurbishment works across multiple 33kV sites.

This role combines site-based survey work with protection design responsibilities, requiring an engineer who is comfortable assessing existing installations on site and translating those findings into clear protection design and documentation.

The successful candidate will play a key role during the early survey and design phases, ensuring protection schemes are correctly assessed, documented and prepared for installation.

Immediate start available.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out site surveys across multiple 33kV substations to assess existing protection and control infrastructure

• Review existing protection schemes, relay configurations and associated drawings

• Produce or update protection design documentation and schematics based on survey findings

• Support development of protection and control design packages for refurbishment works

• Provide technical input during early project delivery and installation phases

• Work closely with project engineers and delivery teams to ensure compliance with UK network standards and engineering practices

• Identify potential design or installation challenges during survey phases and propose solutions

Required Experience

• Experience working on 33kV–132kV substations within DNO or transmission networks

• Strong Protection & Control engineering experience within power transmission or distribution environments

• Experience conducting substation site surveys and asset assessments

• Ability to produce or review protection design documentation and technical drawings

• Strong understanding of protection schemes, relays and substation control systems

• Experience working within utility, transmission or substation contractor environments

Desirable Experience

• Experience supporting substation refurbishment or upgrade programmes

• Familiarity with protection relay platforms such as GE Multilin, Siemens SIPROTEC, ABB / Hitachi Relion or Schneider MiCOM

• Experience with protection testing, commissioning or relay configuration

Contract Details

• Contract position – Outside IR35

• Competitive day rate £750–£950 depending on experience

• Immediate start available (within approximately two weeks)
