The role
We are seeking a Lead Data Engineer to drive the design, development, and optimisation of our data platform. This role is critical in shaping our data engineering practices, enabling high-quality analytics, and ensuring reliable data delivery across the organisation.
Salary
£90,000 per annum DOE
Key accountabilities/responsibilities
- Lead the design, build, and maintenance of scalable data pipelines and data platform components.
- Architect and optimise solutions using Azure SQL, Azure Data Factory (ADF), Databricks, and related Azure services.
- Oversee data ingestion, transformation, and integration processes to support analytics, reporting, and operational data needs.
- Mentor and guide a team of data engineers, promoting best practices and engineering standards.
- Collaborate closely with business stakeholders, analysts, and product owners to translate requirements into robust technical solutions.
- Ensure data quality, governance, and security standards are upheld across all data engineering deliverables.
- Evaluate new tools, technologies, and methodologies to enhance the data engineering function.
- Support the evolution of our cloud data strategy and contribute to architectural decisions.
Technical Expertise
Strong hands-on experience with:
- Azure SQL / SQL Server
- Azure Data Factory (ADF) for orchestration and data pipelines
- Databricks (Spark, Delta Lake, PySpark/Scala)
- Azure cloud services (Storage, Key Vault, Functions, etc.)
- Proven experience designing and implementing modern data architectures (e.g., lakehouse, data warehouse, ELT frameworks).
- Strong proficiency in SQL and at least one programming language (Python preferred).
- Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices for data engineering.
- Experience working with structured and unstructured data at scale.
Desirable / Nice to Have
- Snowflake: exposure to Snowflake architecture, SQL, and pipelines.
- Dynamics 365 / Dataverse: understanding of underlying data structures and integration approaches.
- Experience with Power BI data modelling concepts.
- Knowledge of data governance tools and practices.

- Strong leadership qualities with experience mentoring or guiding engineering teams.
