About the Opportunity

A major UK institution is seeking an experienced and visionary Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) to lead its cyber and information security strategy across a large, complex environment. This role sits at the heart of a high‑profile organisation supporting tens of thousands of users, world‑class research activity, and critical digital services.

Key Responsibilities

As CISO, you will:

  • Define and deliver the organisation‑wide information and cyber security strategy.
  • Lead the Information Security Group, providing direction, vision, and measurable outcomes.
  • Drive a secure‑by‑design approach across all change initiatives, platforms, and digital services.
  • Own all security frameworks, policies, and standards, ensuring they remain current and effective.
  • Oversee the organisation’s security control environment, ensuring operational effectiveness.
  • Establish and manage a robust reporting and risk governance framework.
  • Partner with stakeholders across academic, technical, and professional domains to raise security maturity.
  • Work closely with the Data Privacy Officer to align data protection controls with organisational needs.
  • Serve as a visible leader and ambassador for security internally and externally.

We are looking for a senior leader with:

  • Extensive experience delivering information and cyber security in complex, multi‑stakeholder environments
  • Proven ability to lead transformational security change
  • Deep understanding of risk management, governance, and security best practice
  • Strong knowledge of modern security technologies, frameworks, and processes
  • Experience building and managing high‑performing teams
  • Strong budgeting, planning, and organisational capabilities
  • Excellent communication skills, able to influence at all levels, including senior executives
  • Experience in large public‑sector, education, or research environments
  • Relevant certifications such as CISSP, CISM, or postgraduate qualifications
