About the role…
Reporting to the General Manager Engineering & Horticulture, the Strategic Projects Engineer is a pivotal role providing high-level engineering expertise, strategic advice, and project leadership across the division. This position is a trusted partner to senior leadership, relied upon to navigate complex challenges, progress critical initiatives, and deliver outcomes that require sound judgement, influence, and initiative.
The role balances strategic input with hands‑on delivery, managing complex infrastructure projects, coordinating cross-divisional priorities, and engaging effectively with State Government, Council Members, and key stakeholders. It requires someone who can confidently operate in a politically aware environment, build support across diverse groups, and provide both high-level advice and practical solutions.
What you will do…
- Strategic Leadership: Provide high-level advice and support to the General Manager, contributing to divisional priorities and decision-making.
- Project Leadership: Lead and deliver complex infrastructure projects from planning through to delivery, ensuring outcomes are achieved.
- Government Liaison: Act as Council’s primary contact with State Government agencies, ensuring effective collaboration and representation of Council’s interests.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Influence and negotiate with internal and external stakeholders to build alignment and achieve successful outcomes.
- Cross-Divisional Coordination: Drive collaboration across teams to deliver integrated and effective infrastructure solutions.
- Stormwater & Risk Management: Contribute to stormwater planning and flood risk management initiatives supporting long-term resilience.
- Customer Focus: Ensure community and stakeholder concerns are understood and integrated into project delivery.
- Continuous Improvement: Contribute to innovation, change management, and service improvements across the division.
- Mentorship: Provide guidance and support to engineers and graduates, building capability across the team.
To be successful in the role you will have …
- Tertiary qualifications in Civil Engineering, Asset Management, or a related discipline
- Significant experience delivering complex infrastructure projects and navigating competing priorities
- Strong ability to influence, negotiate, and build trusted relationships across all levels
- Experience operating in environments requiring political awareness and sound judgement
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex issues into clear advice
- A proactive, self-directed approach with a strong focus on delivering outcomes
- Demonstrated experience mentoring or supporting developing engineers
