Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to engage in all aspects of care in the department. This includes caring for patients both pre‑ and post‑operatively, attending relevant MDTs, participating in theatre and clinic sessions, being involved in the on‑call rota, and teaching medical students, nurses, and other allied healthcare professionals.
A large portion of the responsibilities will relate to the cover of the inpatients but will also include outpatient clinics and surgical theatres as well.

Job responsibilities
The Thoracic department at St James University Hospital is one of the largest in the UK with a catchment population of 2.5 million and currently services 6 MDTs across the region. The department has expanded greatly over the years and continues to do so. We currently have 6 consultants, 9 registrars, and 3 ANPs. Theatres and clinics run daily. There is a 32‑bed thoracic unit, including a dedicated 4‑bed HDU.

DUTIES OF THE POST
Post holder will be expected to participate in ward rounds, clinics and operating theatres where appropriate. The post holder accepts that he/she will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation where practicable with senior colleagues. A wide range of practical procedures are undertaken in the Trust which the successfully appointed candidates will have an opportunity to learn. The post‑holder is strongly encouraged to complete regular work‑based placed assessments to document evidence of their personal and professional development.
LEVELS OF RESPONSIBILITY
The post will be available for an initial period of 6 months, extendable to 12. The post is suitable for any junior surgeon who wishes to develop experience in thoracic surgery. There will be a number of research opportunities. The job will be based on the thoracic surgery ward in St James University Hospital. There is a resident registrar as well as a dedicated on‑call consultant who participates in the ward rounds and provides support.
TEACHING AND RESEARCH/STUDY AND TRAINING
It is expected that the post‑holder will have an interest in and active role in teaching. The department is involved in teaching medical staff of all grades as well as medical students. The post‑holder will be expected to participate in delivery of the weekly junior and middle‑grade teaching programmes. From time to time, there may be the requirement to provide clinical training to medical students and paramedics undertaking attachments to the department. In the main, these activities will be delivered concurrently with normal clinical activities, rather than in addition to these.

Person Specification
Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills
- Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at the time of application.
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
- Is up to date and fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs.
- All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.
- Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent (as required to complete Foundation competences) by intended start date.
Qualifications
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
Experience
- Full GMC registration or equivalent, and evidence of achievement of foundation competences, in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice; including:
- provide a good standard of practice and care
- take prompt action if you think that patient safety, dignity or comfort is being compromised
- protect and promote the health of patients and of the public
- treat patients as individuals and respect their dignity
- work with colleagues in the ways that best serve patients interests
- never abuse your patients trust in you or the public’s trust in the profession.
- Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge & judgement & prioritise clinical need
- Demonstrates appropriate technical and clinical competence and evidence of the development of diagnostic skills and clinical judgement
- Ability to provide complete details of employment history
- Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of the Surgery specialty
- Evidence of achievement of FY2 competencies in Medicine and Thoracic Surgery (as defined by the curricula relating to Core Medical training or Core Surgical Training)
