About the role

The Senior Manager, Internal & Corporate Communications plays a pivotal role in shaping and delivering Matalan’s integrated communications agenda during a critical phase of turnaround and transition.

This role leads the day-to-day delivery of Matalan’s integrated internal and corporate communications, ensuring the business communicates with clarity, consistency and credibility across colleagues, stakeholders and external audiences.

This role plays a central part in translating business priorities, performance and change into a clear, joined-up narrative, aligning internal and external messaging and supporting leaders to communicate with confidence and impact.

Working closely with the Director of Internal & Corporate Communications, the role provides senior operational leadership across the function and helps build a more integrated, in‑house‑led communications model.

Key responsibilities

Integrated communications delivery

  • Lead the day-to-day delivery of Matalan’s internal and corporate communications activity, ensuring alignment between business priorities, performance messaging and colleague experience.
  • Translate strategic direction into clear, practical communications that support understanding, alignment and action.
  • Maintain consistency of narrative across internal and external audiences.
  • Own the end-to-end delivery of key communication outputs, including business performance communications and executive messaging.

Internal communications and engagement

  • Support the delivery of Matalan’s internal communications and engagement strategy across Support Hub, retail and DCs.
  • Oversee the development of clear, consistent communication rhythms and materials that enable leaders and managers to communicate effectively.
  • Ensure key business messages are translated into communications that are relevant and actionable for different audiences.

Corporate communications and executive support

  • Support the delivery of corporate communications activity, including proactive and reactive external communications, stakeholder materials and executive positioning.
  • Work closely with senior leaders to shape messaging for key internal and external moments, ensuring clarity, consistency and alignment with business priorities.
  • Partner with Finance, Trading and other functions to support communication of performance and key business developments.

Agency and stakeholder management

  • Manage day-to-day engagement with retained agency partners, ensuring clear briefs, strong output and alignment with Matalan’s priorities.
  • Build effective relationships with stakeholders across the business to ensure communications are well-informed and commercially grounded.

Team and capability contribution

  • Support the development of an integrated communications function with clear roles, strong standards and effective ways of working.
  • Contribute to building capability across the team and strengthening overall communications effectiveness.

KPIs and measures of success

  • Internal and external communications are more aligned and consistent.
  • Business performance and priorities are communicated clearly and effectively.
  • Leaders and managers are well supported in their communication.
  • Communication activity is better coordinated and more disciplined.
  • The function operates with greater confidence and reduced reliance on external support.

About You

  • Strong experience across both internal and corporate communications in a large, complex organisation.
  • Experience supporting senior leaders with messaging and communication.
  • Ability to translate complex business priorities into clear, practical communication.
  • Experience working across multiple stakeholders and managing competing priorities.
  • Strong judgement, political awareness and ability to operate calmly in a fast‑moving environment.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to move confidently between strategic narrative and practical delivery.
  • Able to work independently, take ownership quickly and operate with limited supervision.

Desirable

  • Retail or operational environment experience.
