Overview
An exciting opportunity to join Boeing Defence UK as a Software Engineer (Experienced or Senior Level) to support software development programmes. The Software Engineering and Systems Integration team in the UK works across Boeing Defence, Commercial Airplanes, Global Services and Uncrewed technologies. The team develops sub-systems and tools for Defence platforms, including Synthetic Environment Sub-systems, Mission Systems Capability, Autonomous Behaviours, Ground Control Systems, Technical Publications and in-house proprietary tools. We are seeking a Software Engineer based in Bristol or Fleet to support Defence and Security domains at Boeing locations and customer sites across the UK, including Autonomous Systems, Training and Simulation, Cyber, Space, Intelligence and Security.
This requisition is for a locally hired position in Bristol or Fleet, UK. Benefits and pay are determined at the local level and are not part of Boeing U.S. based payroll. The position is expected to be hybrid with 3 days in the office. Some work may be onsite at listed locations at the hiring team’s discretion and could change in the future. Candidates must be eligible and willing to obtain SC level clearance. Level of role offered depends on level of experience.
Responsibilities
- Designing, developing, testing, and maintaining non-embedded software throughout the end-to-end lifecycle that meets industry, customer, safety, and regulation standards for Defence programmes
- Reviewing, analyzing, and translating customer requirements into initial design of software products
- Developing, documenting and maintaining architectures, requirements, algorithms, interfaces and designs for software products
- Debugging and resolving issues identified to ensure the reliability and efficiency of software products
- Handling user inquiries, troubleshooting technical issues and user feedback analysis
- Implementing current and emerging technologies, tools, frameworks and changes in regulations relevant to software development
- Developing, establishing, monitoring and improving software processes, tools and key performance metrics that align projects with organizational goals and industry benchmarks
- Performing software project management activities and software supplier management functions
- Providing feedback to junior developers through code reviews and helping guide them in best practices with well documented code and development processes
- Working collaboratively with other engineers, specialists and cross functional teams to achieve a sustainable outcome
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree or higher from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (including manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science
- Ability to obtain security clearance
- Open to occasional travel
Preferred Qualifications (Skills/Experience)
- Level 3 (Experienced):
- 5+ years of experience as a Software Developer or similar role
- 5+ years across Software Development Lifecycle and ISO9001 standards
- Experience in developing and applying continuous improvement to software processes and productivity
- Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Java, JavaScript, Python, C#, .Net, XAML)
- Strong understanding of object-oriented programming and software design principles
- Understanding of Microsoft WPF and MVVM design patterns
- Experience with databases (SQL, NoSQL) and API integrations
- Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git)
- Experience with front-end frameworks
- Knowledge of Agile development methodologies
- Familiarity with DevOps, automation and CI/CD concepts
- Understanding of testing frameworks and unit testing practices
- Level 4 (Senior Software Engineer):
- 10+ years of experience as a Software Developer or similar role
- 10+ years across Software Development Lifecycle and ISO9001 standards
- 8-10 years of experience in continuous improvement for software processes
- Proven leadership and management skills with the ability to develop, communicate and inspire staff
- Knowledge of customer behaviours, needs and expectations
- Ability to lead a team/discipline to quickly resolve complex problems
- Ability to build and maintain broad network of business relationships
- Good understanding of current and emerging technologies and how other enterprises are using them to drive digital business support
- Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent Required
