Senior Engineering Manager
Location: Reading area (2-3 onsite days per week)
Contract: 12 month fixed term contract with possible extension
Pay Rate: £46.84 PAYE / £63.57 LTD per hour
Start Date: ASAP (subject to security clearance)
About the Role:
This is not a passive oversight role-it’s a delivery-critical leadership position. You will take full engineering ownership of facility design across complex programmes, ensuring solutions are technically robust, licensable, and aligned to business and lifecycle requirements.
You’ll operate as the senior engineering authority within projects, driving design integrity from concept through to handover while balancing safety, cost, schedule, and long-term performance.
Key Accountabilities:
- Own and deliver integrated facility design solutions aligned to business and functional requirements
- Ensure designs meet through-life performance, safety, and regulatory/licensing standards
- Assess and advise on design readiness across lifecycle phases (tender, construction, commissioning, handover)
- Maintain design intent and configuration control from inception to project close-out
- Produce and oversee proportionate safety documentation supporting delivery
- Uphold high standards across safety, security, quality, and environmental performance
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as the lead engineering representative on projects
- Take accountability for delivery across quality, safety, cost, and schedule
- Ensure engineering requirements are fit for purpose and appropriately defined
- Recommend design budgets and programmes to senior leadership
- Evaluate and ensure capability of internal and external engineering resources
- Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary design delivery
- Conduct ongoing design reviews and maintain technical oversight
- Ensure solutions are deliverable, licensable, and value-driven
- Manage design intent and configuration control throughout the lifecycle
- Support continuous improvement and capability development within engineering
- Contribute to strengthening facility design capability and engineering standards
Essential skills and experience:
- Proven leadership in a project delivery environment (not just BAU engineering)
- Strong understanding of production systems and process/partner equipment
- Experience integrating engineering design into new or existing facilities
- Solid electrical engineering understanding (not superficial)
- Demonstrated multidisciplinary engineering background
- Experience managing complex design interfaces and stakeholders
