The Director of Energy Testing Services (Hydrogen) is responsible for building and leading a global hydrogen testing and certification platform. This role drives strategic growth across the hydrogen value chain—production, storage, transport, and end-use—while ensuring alignment with SGS’s core Testing, Inspection, and Certification (TIC) services.
The position combines technical leadership, commercial responsibility, and operational oversight to position us as a market leader in hydrogen assurance services supporting the global energy transition.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Growth & Service Development
- Define and execute our global hydrogen testing and certification strategy.
- Develop integrated service offerings combining testing, inspection, certification, and advisory services.
- Identify and scale opportunities in:
- Green and blue hydrogen production
- Fuel cells and electrolyzers
- Hydrogen mobility (automotive, aerospace, rail)
- Storage (compressed, liquefied) and pipeline infrastructure
- Collaborate with our global business lines (Industries & Environment, Natural Resources, Connectivity & Products).
Commercial Leadership (P&L Ownership)
- Own full P&L for hydrogen-related testing services globally or regionally.
- Drive revenue growth through key accounts, strategic partnerships, and large-scale energy projects.
- Support global key account programs targeting major energy companies, OEMs, and EPC firms.
- Lead bid strategy for complex, multi-country hydrogen projects.
Technical & Regulatory Leadership
- Serve as our internal and external expert on hydrogen testing, certification, and risk management.
- Ensure compliance with global standards and schemes, including:
- ISO (e.g., 19880 series)
- ASTM International
- SAE International
- CSA Group
- Represent SGS in industry working groups and standards committees.
Operational Excellence
- Oversee global network of laboratories and testing facilities supporting hydrogen services.
- Optimize lab utilization, turnaround time, and cost efficiency.
- Implement best practices across regions, ensuring consistency and scalability.
Innovation & Digitalization
- Lead innovation initiatives in hydrogen testing, including:
- Advanced materials testing (embrittlement, permeation)
- High-pressure and cryogenic testing
- Digital inspection and remote monitoring solutions
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Materials, Chemical) or related field
- Advanced degree (MBA, Master’s, or PhD) preferred
Experience
- 12–15+ years in energy, hydrogen, or TIC environments
- Strong experience within a TIC organization (preferred Intertek, Bureau Veritas, or Element Materials Technology)
- Proven track record managing P&L and scaling technical service lines
- Deep knowledge of hydrogen systems, testing methodologies, and certification frameworks
