ROLE: Senior Primary Electrical & Plant Engineer

HOURS: Full‑time

LOCATION: Hybrid (various UK locations)

We’re looking for a highly experienced Senior Primary Electrical & Plant Engineer to join our specialist high‑voltage renewables engineering team. In this role, you will deliver safe, reliable and efficient designs for substations and earthing systems across a range of renewable energy and utility projects.

Role Responsibilities

Substation & Electrical Design

  • Produce detailed electrical layouts for substations up to 132kV AIS/GIS, including cable routes, LV layouts, switch rooms and control rooms.
  • Create plan/elevation drawings, busbar calculations, structural outlines, clamp schedules and material specifications.
  • Develop Balance‑of‑Plant / EPC site layouts for renewable technologies including battery, wind and solar projects.

Earthing System Design

  • Manage earthing system design deliverables, including complete drawing suites and technical documentation.
  • Perform soil resistivity testing, EPR studies, touch/step voltage assessments and fall‑of‑potential testing.
  • Model earthing systems using tools such as CDEGS and specify earthing materials.
  • Conduct lightning protection and EMC assessments in line with standards such as BS 62305‑2.

Compliance & Technical Leadership

  • Ensure full compliance with British and International Standards (e.g., BS7671, ENATS, NGTS)
  • Review tender documents, define electrical scope and prepare design deliverables
  • Coordinate multi‑disciplinary design inputs (structural, planning, CAD) to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Provide technical mentoring, guidance and supervision to junior engineers.

Project Delivery

  • Resolve design challenges, maintain document control and support procurement activities.
  • Ensure quality, budget and programme adherence across all design stages.
  • Apply safety‑by‑design principles and comply fully with CDM Regulations 2015.

  • Required Qualifications
  • Degree, HNC or HND in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems preferred).
  • Strong background in HV/EHV primary electrical design (11kV–132kV).
  • Experience within consultancy, contracting or utility environments.
  • Excellent knowledge of UK and international substation standards and installation specifications.
  • Ability to produce, review and interpret detailed technical documents and drawings.
  • Proactive, organised and capable of managing complex design workflows.
  • Familiarity with 3D CAD tools such as Revit (desirable).
  • Strong understanding of cable installation practices, G81 standards and risk management.

  • Proven ability to take initiative and adopt a proactive, solution‑focused approach.
  • Confident in managing inter‑departmental design interfaces such as structural, planning and CAD teams.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to mentor and develop junior engineers.
  • Excellent understanding of risks associated with cabling works and HV/EHV design.
