Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will play a significant role in ensuring that NHFT continues to be a learning organisation. Ensuring that patient safety and lessons learnt are part of the fundamental principles of every member of team NHFT, clinical and non-clinical.

The post holder will champion patient safety improvement and ensure that systems thinking, human factors understanding and just culture principles are at the heart of patient safety.

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that the Trust has in place good governance, systems, and processes to ensure the implementation of the NHS patient safety strategy and framework.

The post holder with provide leadership and have management responsibility for a portfolio of services that have a role in patient safety. This includes and are not exclusive to, patient safety team, infection prevention and control team, complaints and PALS, safeguarding, patient experience and involvement.

The post hlder will ensure that patient and carer experience are central to patient safety. That patient, the public and staff are central to the concept of co-production in the Trust and that co-production is part for the culture of the Trust.

In addition, the post holder will ensure the development of effective policies and local approaches to partnership working to ensure that services provided and commissioned reflect the diverse demand, need and aspirations of the community served. This will include providing expert advice, strategic direction and a robust assurance-seeking, quality improvement focus across the Trust. The post holder will lead the continued development of an integrated and proactive approach to learning from patient and service user feedback and outcomes.

The post holder will work as part of a wider team in ensuring that patient safety is appropriately prioritised and considered in the work of NHFT. They should build and maintain good working relationships with a board range of internal and external stakeholders on issue relating to patient safety.

Person specification

Senior experience working within a Mental Health Trust

  • Experience working at a senior clinical or operational level within a Mental Health Trust.

Patient safety leadership experience

  • Significant experience in a patient safety-related role, leading safety improvement and learning.

National policy interpretation and implementation

  • Proven ability to interpret national patient safety policy and implement it at organisational level.

Senior management of complex services and teams

  • Experience managing multi disciplinary teams and complex service portfolios, including performance and resources.

Partnership working and patient/carer engagement

  • Demonstrable experience of working in partnership with stakeholders, patients and carers to improve safety and quality.

Education

  • Masters Degree
