The Data Protection Manager plays a key role in leading data protection activities, managing the Data Protection team, and promoting a strong culture of privacy across the organisation. The position ensures compliance with data protection laws, internal policies, and recognised best practices.
As part of the role, success will be built on establishing trust and acting as a “critical friend” to the wider business. Close collaboration with internal teams is essential to ensure that data protection obligations are met across all data collection and processing activities.
This is a senior, broad-raging position involving engagement with stakeholders across the organisation. The role contributes to delivering the overall data protection strategy while continuously improving organisational maturity in this area.
Key Responsibilities:
- Build strong relationships with internal teams, senior leadership, and external stakeholders to support data protection initiatives
- Embed data protection and privacy principles into systems, processes, and ways of working, including delivering training and awareness programmes
- Lead and evolve the organisation’s data protection strategy, responding to emerging challenges in the regulatory landscape
- Collaborate closely with Data Governance and Information Security teams to ensure a consistent and aligned approach
Compliance and Governance
- Ensure compliance with applicable data protection laws and regulations, including UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018
- Maintain sufficient awareness of international regulations (e.g. China’s PIPL) to manage global risk exposure
- Develop, implement, and maintain data protection policies and procedures aligned with legal and industry standards
- Ensure staff awareness of, and adherence to, organisational policies
Privacy and Risk Management
- Develop and maintain privacy notices in line with evolving legal requirements and data processing activities
- Establish and manage data sharing agreements with internal and external stakeholders where required
- Conduct or oversee Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), ensuring risks are identified, understood, and mitigated appropriately
- Manage data breach response processes, including regulatory notifications and post-incident reviews to support continuous improvement
Key Experience Required:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to educate, influence, and engage stakeholders
- Proven experience managing data protection or privacy programmes
- Excellent project management capabilities, with the ability to oversee multiple initiatives simultaneously
- Confident presenting and influencing at senior or executive level
- Recognised certifications such as CIPP/E and/or CIPM
- In-depth knowledge of UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, with awareness of international regulations such as PIPL
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to assess risks and develop mitigation strategies
- Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively across teams
- Demonstrated people management experience, alongside the ability to work independently and prioritise workload
- Ability to manage complex and competing priorities in a dynamic environment
- Commitment to continuous learning and staying current with evolving privacy laws and best practices
