Job Description:

Volunteer Finance Director (Trustee)

Providing board‑level financial oversight, governance and strategic guidance, supporting budgets, compliance and long‑term sustainability of a thriving community theatre and charity.

What difference will you make?

Trustees at Teddington Theatre Club play a vital role in sustaining and strengthening a much‑loved community arts organisation that exists for public benefit. The impact of their work is both practical and deeply human. Trustees help ensure that theatre remains accessible, inclusive and affordable, while safeguarding the long‑term future of a valuable cultural asset.

Through strong governance, sound decision‑making and responsible stewardship, trustees enable the Club to continue producing high‑quality live theatre for local audiences of all ages. Their oversight helps ensure that creative ambition is balanced with financial sustainability, allowing performances, education and participation to remain open to people who might otherwise face barriers to engaging with the arts. Every strategic decision taken by the Board directly supports this mission.

Trustees also have a significant impact on the people who make the theatre happen. Teddington Theatre Club is powered by volunteers – performers, creatives, technicians and front‑of‑house teams – who give their time and skills to create exceptional productions. By providing clear leadership, stability and support, trustees help create an environment in which volunteers feel valued, confident and able to thrive. This, in turn, strengthens community connection, wellbeing and personal development.

The Board’s work is especially important in protecting and maintaining the Club’s purpose‑built theatre building, which serves not only the organisation but also a wide range of visiting theatre companies, youth groups and community organisations. Trustees help ensure that this space remains safe, well‑managed and financially viable, enabling many other groups to benefit from access to professional‑quality facilities.

For trustees, the impact of their role is tangible and lasting. Their contribution helps sustain a local arts hub that brings people together, nurtures creativity, supports young people and enriches community life. At a time when community arts organisations face increasing pressures, trustees make a meaningful difference by ensuring that theatre, education and cultural participation continue to flourish for current and future generations.

Being a trustee at Teddington Theatre Club means knowing that your skills, judgement and commitment directly support creativity, inclusion and community wellbeing – and that your impact is visible every time the curtain rises.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for a Finance Director (Trustee) who brings sound judgement, financial awareness and a collaborative approach to board‑level decision‑making. Our ideal trustee is someone who is motivated by making a positive difference through the arts and who wants to use their skills to support a thriving, volunteer‑led community organisation.

The most important qualities we are seeking are integrity, reliability and the ability to think strategically. The Finance Director plays a key role in helping the Board understand the organisation’s financial position, assess risk and plan confidently for the future. We are therefore looking for someone who is comfortable working with financial information, asking constructive questions and presenting clear, balanced advice to fellow trustees.

Professional experience in finance, accounting, business management or a related field would be highly valuable, particularly experience involving budgeting, financial reporting, cashflow management or financial controls. However, we do not require a formal accounting qualification. What matters most is the ability to interpret financial information accurately, communicate it clearly to non‑specialists and apply it in a practical, proportionate way within a charitable context.

The Finance Director will work closely with an established volunteer finance team and with other Board members, so strong interpersonal skills are essential. We are looking for someone who enjoys working collaboratively, respects the contribution of volunteers and is comfortable supporting and guiding others rather than working in isolation. Experience of working with volunteers, charities or not‑for‑profit organisations would be an advantage, but is not essential.

Good organisational skills and attention to detail are important, particularly in relation to financial governance, compliance and reporting. The role involves supporting budgeting, monitoring performance against plans and helping ensure that regulatory requirements are met. An ability to balance necessary financial discipline with the realities of a creative, community‑focused organisation is key.

While not essential, an interest in theatre, arts or community activity would be welcomed. We value trustees who understand the wider impact of the arts on wellbeing, education and community cohesion, and who are motivated by protecting access to creative opportunities for a broad and diverse audience.

We are keen to encourage applications from people with a range of backgrounds and lived experiences, and we welcome interest from individuals who may be new to trusteeship but bring relevant professional skills and a willingness to learn. Above all, we are looking for someone who shares our commitment to public benefit and who is excited by the opportunity to play a meaningful role in the long‑term sustainability of a much‑loved community theatre.

What will you be doing?

We are looking for a committed and capable Finance Director (Trustee) who can bring sound judgement, financial insight and a collaborative approach to our Board. This is an opportunity for someone who wants to use their professional skills to support a well‑established community arts charity, working alongside a passionate team of volunteers to help guide the organisation responsibly and sustainably.

This is an important moment for Teddington Theatre Club. Like many community theatres, we are operating in a challenging environment of rising costs and increasing demands on volunteer‑led organisations, while also managing and maintaining a purpose‑built theatre building. At the same time, we have strong ambitions to protect our long‑term future, strengthen financial planning and ensure we continue to deliver high‑quality, affordable theatre and community access to the arts.

The new trustee will play a key role in helping us meet these challenges by providing board‑level financial leadership, supporting good governance and helping the Board make informed, confident decisions. Their contribution will directly enable the Club to remain financially resilient, artistically ambitious and firmly rooted in public benefit. For the right person, this is a chance to make a tangible and lasting impact on a much‑loved community institution at a time when their expertise will truly matter.
