About The Role

As a (Senior) Machine Learning Engineer, you’ll build novel solutions to real‑world problems. This may include creating chatbots to coach users around their financial health, building classifiers to better understand transaction data, or optimizing transactions within our payments platform. You’ll lead technical work within a team of adaptable, creative and product‑focused engineers, integrating cutting‑edge machine learning across a variety of products and deploying them into production for millions of users.

What you’ll be doing

  • Join the Machine Learning Growth domain, working across Growth Marketing and Growth Personalisation. In Growth Marketing, develop MMM and/or LTV models; in Growth Personalisation, work on recommender systems and/or behavioural modelling.
  • Deploy models into production using our in‑house ML platform or integrate with LLMs hosted by OpenAI, Anthropic, GCP, AWS and others.
  • Work cross‑functionally with backend engineers, data analysts, UX writers, product managers, annotation teams, and others to ship features that improve users’ financial health.
  • Initiate and lead technical work toward problems that were previously unknown or poorly understood, driving change at the chapter level affecting multiple squads.
  • Mentor and advise colleagues on model, architecture, and evaluation choices.

Examples of Product Feature Work

  • Building AI agents to explore and derive insights from users’ transactional data.
  • Deepening understanding of users’ finances through models extracting meaning from transactional data.
  • Developed contextual intent classifiers to understand conversations users have with Cleo, enabling control of how Cleo should respond.
  • Built models to understand the actions users have available to them in Cleo and provide those contextually in conversations.
  • Built models to understand the risk of customers using bank transaction features and user activity.
  • Built models to optimise payment success for our customers and optimise costs for the business – a two‑sided optimisation problem.

What You’ll Need

  • Experience in Growth, either Marketing (MMM and/or LTV models) or Personalisation (recommender systems and/or behaviour modelling).
  • Excellent knowledge of Data Science (Python, SQL) and production tools.
  • A deep understanding of probability and statistics fundamentals.
  • Big picture thinking to correctly diagnose problems and productionise research.
  • Top‑tier communication skills, able to partner with Product and Commercial Leaders.
  • Industry‑leading contributions to your field, communicated through conferences, blogs, talks, or open‑source projects.
  • Advanced degree in a quantitative discipline or equivalent commercial experience.
