Senior Environmental Protection Officer

Hillingdon Council is offering an initial temporary contract for 3‑6 months with the possibility of extension to a permanent position, depending on experience.

Location: UB8 1UW – Hybrid.

Responsibilities

• Investigate a caseload of environmental protection issues and projects, ensuring compliance with legal requirements and benchmark standards.
• Provide high‑quality, customer‑focused enforcement, regulation, and technical advice to residents, stakeholders, businesses, elected members, and colleagues.
• Assist with induction, training of peers, new employees, apprentice Environmental Health Officers, and other staff as required.
• Act as a subject‑matter expert and first point of contact on technical issues within the Environmental Protection expertise area.
• Conduct reactive visits and proactive investigations, carrying out remedial actions in line with competency standards to ensure compliance.
• Maintain knowledge of the current Team Plan and understand your contribution to its delivery.
• Demonstrate cost consciousness and identify cost‑effective changes to your work processes.
• Propose improvements to current ways of working to deliver a more efficient and effective service for customers.

Qualifications and Experience

• Experience in routine casework and inspections related to nuisance.
• Relevant qualification in Environmental Health, Acoustics, or a similar field.
• Demonstrable practical experience in environmental protection work.
• Experience in investigations and enforcement actions, including serving notices, preparing prosecution papers, writing statements, and dealing with formal cautions.
• Experience working with council residents, private residents, and commercial businesses.
