If you are looking for a rewarding opportunity to contribute to one of Scotland’s major cultural institutions, we would like to hear from you. The Cabinet Secretary for Constitution, External Affairs and Culture is seeking to appoint seven new Trustees to the Board of the National Galleries of Scotland (NGS). Some of these posts will fill current vacancies, and others will be phased appointments to meet succession planning.

NGS is a vibrant organisation, employing around 400 staff across its three Edinburgh sites. Its mission is to care for, develop, research and display the national collection of Scottish and international art, alongside a wide-ranging programme of exhibitions, learning, research and public engagement. NGS welcomes around two million visitors each year and reaches many more through its digital offer.

Remuneration and Time Commitment

Appointment as a Trustee is unpaid but reasonable travel and subsistence, childcare and carer expenses will be reimbursed.

Trustees are expected to prepare for and attend approximately five Board meetings per year.

In addition, Trustees will normally serve on at least one Board Committee, which may involve a further three to six meetings per year. Trustees are also encouraged, where possible, to attend events and activities organised by NGS.

Skills and Experience

All applicants must be able to demonstrate at least one of the priority criteria and all of the essential criteria set out below. In addition, applicants are asked to submit a tailored career history.

Priority Criteria

While not all applicants are expected to demonstrate experience in every area, we are particularly interested in candidates with experience in at least one of the following:

  • Finance and audit
  • People, workforce and organisational change
  • Construction and major capital projects
  • Commercial enterprise
  • Artistic and research practice
  • Political and public policy experience.

Broadcast and media experience in the arts.

Successful applicants must also be able to demonstrate:

  • Enthusiasm for museums and galleries and their role in society
  • Seeing the ‘bigger picture’
  • Challenging the views of others in a constructive and supportive way
