Role Description
This is a full-time Fire Engineer position, primarily remote, with the need for a flexible approach to undertake site visits and client meetings as part of a hybrid working arrangement.
In this role, you will be responsible for:
- Specify proportionate fire safety measures across a range of building types and project stages
- Provide advice and guidance on the application of fire safety legislation and Building Regulations in support of projects
- Develop clear, practical Fire Safety Strategies and supporting technical reports for new and existing buildings
- Undertake fire engineering assessments and contribute to performance-based design where appropriate
- Support risk-based decision-making and provide expert advice on fire safety compliance
- Assist clients in navigating regulatory gateways and approval processes, ensuring documentation is accurate, proportionate and robust
- Support multi-disciplinary design teams by providing practical, coordinated and technically robust fire safety advice throughout concept, design development, detailed design and construction
- Undertake site visits, surveys and inspections to assess fire safety risks, existing conditions and compliance requirements
- Maintain strong client relationships through clear communication, pragmatic advice and a solutions-focused mindset
You will play a key part in supporting the delivery of high-quality fire engineering services across a diverse portfolio, while contributing to the continued growth and development of Coeus Technical’s technical capability.
Essential Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Fire Engineering, Fire & Risk Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Experience working as a Fire Engineer.
- Strong understanding of UK fire safety legislation, guidance and regulatory frameworks, including the Building Regulations, Building Safety Act, Fire Safety Order.
- Working knowledge of Fire Risk Assessments (FRA / FRAEW) and routes to compliance.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to self-manage workload and proactively resolve challenges.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain fire safety principles.
- Confidence in defending a fire safety position and explaining the rationale behind decisions to clients, approval authorities and project stakeholders.

- Right to work in the UK.
- Ability to discuss when and why performance-based design may be appropriate.
- Experience of construction activities.
- Awareness or foundational understanding of tools such as B-Risk, Pathfinder, PyroSim or FDS.
- Experience providing expert witness evidence.
- Professional membership or registration (e.g. IFE, IFSM, CABE, CIBSE).
- Experience supporting PAS 9980 appraisals, remediation work or complex design projects.
- Interest in contributing to continuous improvement and development of internal processes and methodologies.
- Familiar with RIBA stages of design or other design frameworks and understand the total fire concept: from the client brief through to construction and operation, the fire engineering challenges relevant to different design stages and the level/type of fire engineering input required to progress the design and contribute to completion.
- Understand and manage the scope and relevant programme constraints of projects, experience in project changes management
- Knowledge of the UK market and approvals process.
