Job Overview
This role is pivotal in delivering the organisation’s digital strategy, transforming digital concepts into clinically led realities that prioritise user experience and improve clinical outcomes. On the back of the ten year plan and the move to one large hospital trust across Bristol, this is an exciting time to join the digital services team.
The post holder will oversee the safe and effective delivery of clinical systems at North Bristol NHS Trust. The post holder will support the configuration, build and optimisation of the system, including the ongoing development of datasets, reporting capability and data quality processes. They will also work alongside clinical colleagues in each area to ensure the system is shaped around the needs of clinicians and patients.
A key part of the role will be leading and coordinating training, supporting workflow development, and managing the operational demands of a complex multi‑site. The post holder will lead a dedicated CIS team, ensuring the system is maintained, optimised and continues to evolve with clinical practice.
Main duties of the job
- Provide day to day leadership and operational management of the Critical Care CIS.
- Maintain oversight of CIS document models, ensuring consistent standards while supporting local clinical variation where appropriate.
- Carry out regular system management duties, resolving issues promptly and escalating to IM&T or the CIS vendor where required.
- Ensure ongoing compliance with the Data Protection Act, FOI legislation, Caldicott principles and relevant Trust policies relating to confidentiality, security and access to patient records.
- Provide first line digital and technical support to clinical users, ensuring continuity of service in collaboration with IM&T and the CIS provider.
- Act as a key communication link between clinical teams, Digital Services and system suppliers, maintaining strong working relationships that support continuous system improvement.
- Promote digital best practice and engage clinical teams in the use of CIS functionality to support safe, effective and efficient care.
- Contribute to the Trust’s wider digital strategy by identifying opportunities for innovation, optimisation and integration with other digital systems.
- Provide regular BAU reporting, updates and insights to divisional and corporate governance groups on CIS performance, risks and improvement priorities.
- The post holder will provide day to day line management and leadership to the Critical Care Information System Manager.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
Digital Transformation
- Provide day to day leadership and operational management of the Critical Care CIS.
- Ensure the CIS remains clinically safe, reliable, including ongoing configuration, optimisation and development of care modules, procedures and digital workflows.
- Maintain oversight of CIS document models, ensuring consistent standards while supporting local clinical variation where appropriate.

Service Improvement
- Lead the ongoing monitoring, optimisation and enhancement of the CIS to support consistent, high quality critical care practices.
- Ensure resources are used effectively in the ongoing operation and development of the CIS service.
- Maintain and oversee CIS related guidelines, policies and protocols, ensuring they remain up to date, evidence based and aligned to clinical practice.
- Develop and maintain CIS enabled digital workflows that support clinical quality, safety and operational efficiency across all ICUs.
- Ensure timely submission of monthly critical care datasets (CCMDS) for Adult and Cardiac ICU, maintaining high standards of data quality.
- Work closely with IM&T and Finance through established data quality processes to ensure accuracy of all CIS generated critical care data.
- Lead the work of the Information Analyst and Database Administrator in delivering high quality reporting for CCMDS, Q&SPIP, audits and local data needs.
- Maintain effective data collection systems, ensuring robust processes for reporting, audit and service evaluation.
- Carry out database management duties, including query writing, research data extraction and supporting preparation of patient records for audit.
- Monitor the performance and impact of the CIS, using data and feedback to drive continuous improvement.
- Support the MDT in achieving shared clinical objectives by ensuring CIS capabilities align with service needs and clinical best practice.
Person specification
Education/Training/Qualifications – Essential criteria
- Registered appropriate healthcare professional with current registration.
- Knowledge and experience of the Critical Care Minimum Dataset and its role in commissioning.
Desirable criteria
- Understanding of the research and audit process.
Work Experience – Essential criteria
- Experience of working within a Critical Care environment.
- Experience of managing CIS or similar digital clinical systems and project delivery.
- Ability to communicate complex information clearly in a range of contexts, including written communication, face to face discussions and presentations to individuals and groups.
- Ability to write operational reports that demonstrate the day to day productivity and value of the team.
Analytical Skills – Essential criteria
- Ability to analyse complex situations and provide clear interpretation, advice and recommendations to senior clinical and non clinical managers.
- Ability to organise and prioritise workload and make sound decisions based on available information.
- Ability to deliver high quality work within tight deadlines.
Management Skills – Essential criteria
- Proven experience of managing staff and teams effectively.
- Ability to manage and deliver complex tasks in a multitasking and interruptive environment.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team, providing leadership and support as required.
